CORVALLIS, Ore. - Andy Karplus, a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at Oregon State University, has been chosen as the Researcher of the Year by the OSU's chapter of Sigma Xi, a research and scientific honor society.

Karplus is an expert in the atomic structure of proteins, with special emphasis on proteins that take part in the oxidation-reduction chemistry of a cell. He recently developed a model in which peroxiredoxin, a type of protein, reduces hydrogen peroxide and also regulates its activity as a cellular signal.

He also was recognized for determining the atomic structure of glutathione reductase, a potential drug target against plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes malaria.

Karplus will discuss his research at the 2005 Researcher of the Year Award lecture and reception on Friday, Jan. 27. Free and open to the public, the lecture will begin at 3 p.m. in OSU's Memorial Union, Journey Room.
