SALEM, Ore.--The public is invited to learn about growing 38 varieties of table grapes during an Oregon State University Extension Service field seminar Saturday, Sept. 13, at Broadacres Nursery in Hubbard, Ore.

The table grape field seminar is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the nursery, 9993 Broadacres Rd. NE, Hubbard. Pre-registration, with a fee of $10, is required by 5 p.m. Sept. 10, by mail or in person at the Marion County Extension Office, 3180 Center St. NE, room 1361, Salem, OR 97301.

A revolutionary trellising system that maximizes yield will be introduced, according to Neil Bell, Marion County Extension horticulturist.

Grape authority Lon Rombough, author of "The Grape Grower" and many other prize-winning publications, will share his expertise.

During an open tour, attendees will observe a vineyard and taste and evaluate the fruit. Discussion and a question-and-answer session will be conducted on plant certification, grafting, planting and training, trellis systems, plant pests and disease resistance. Grape recipes and other ways to use the fruit will be available.

Advanced discussions will be on cluster thinning and tipping; plant energy sinks and how to manipulate them; and advanced pruning, trellising and fruit placement. People are encouraged to bring table grapes they wish to have identified.

Each person will receive a take-home packet that includes "Growing Grapes in Your Home Garden" by Bernadine Strik, horticulturist with the OSU Extension Service.

Driving directions: From Interstate 5, take exit 278 onto Ehlen Rd. Go west 1.5 miles to Butteville Road NE; turn left and go south 3.3 miles to Broadacres Rd. NE; turn left on Broadacres and go east ½ mile to the vineyard.
