CORVALLIS, Ore. – Courtney S. Campbell, a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Oregon State University, has been named the Hundere Chair in Religion and Culture at OSU.

Campbell has been on the university’s faculty since 1990 and specializes in the field of biomedical ethics. He has published two books and 125 articles on various subjects in ethics and moral values. He received his B.A. in religious studies from Yale University and his Ph.D. in religious studies from the University of Virginia.

Prior to coming to OSU, Courtney was a research associate at The Hastings Center, a think tank for medical ethics. He also was editor of the Hastings Center Report, the leading professional journal in the field of bioethics.

The Hundere Endowment in Religion and Culture was started in 1994 through a substantial donation from an OSU alumnus, Al Hundere. From 1994-2007, the Hundere Endowment supported the teaching and scholarship of Marcus Borg, an internationally-acclaimed scholar in historical Jesus studies.

Campbell plans to raise the regional and national profile of the Hundere Endowment through developing an annual Hundere lecture in religion and culture as well as a speaker series. He also will oversee an undergraduate certificate program in religion and culture, and sponsor interdisciplinary research projects in such areas as religion and the environment, religious diversity and pluralism, peace, tolerance, and social justice in religious traditions.
