CORVALLIS, Ore. - Two Oregon State University professors - a sheep specialist and an expert in the reproductive biology of farm animals - have been honored by scientific associations.

Jim Thompson, an associate professor and OSU Extension sheep specialist, received the Extension Award from the Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science (WSASAS) during its annual meeting in Fort Collins, Colo. The society recognized him for his 29 years of outstanding work in educating and helping sheep producers.

Thompson, who was president of the WSASAS in 2005-06, teaches classes on animal nutrition and sheep management, as well as workshops that help sheep farmers increase their number of successful births and produce safe, high-quality meat and wool.

Fred Stormshak, a professor of physiology and biochemistry in OSU's Department of Animal Sciences, received the Distinguished Service Award from the Society for the Study of Reproduction during its annual meeting in Pittsburgh, Penn. The award is given to people who have significantly contributed to the field of reproductive biology through their leadership and service.

Stormshak, who was president of the society in 1997-98, is a distinguished professor emeritus who came to OSU in 1968. His work has focused primarily on the hormonal control of the reproductive process in laboratory and domestic animals, including cows and sheep.
