CORVALLIS, Ore. - Kelly Benoit-Bird, a marine ecologist at Oregon State University, has been named the 2009 recipient of the R. Bruce Lindsay Award by the Acoustical Society of America. She was cited for "contributions to marine ecological acoustics."

This biennial award honors a young scientist under the age of 35 who has been prominent in acoustic research and active in the society.

Benoit-Bird, an assistant professor in OSU's College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, specializes in the use of acoustics to study the relationships between different species in marine environments. She recently published studies that used acoustics to discover new behavioral patterns among spinner dolphins and Humboldt squid.

In 2006, Benoit-Bird was honored by the White House with a prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. In 2005, she received the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research.

The OSU ecologist will receive her award from the Acoustical Society of America this spring in Portland during its annual meeting. She also is scheduled to present a plenary lecture.

A faculty member at OSU since 2003, Benoit-Bird is a graduate of Brown University and earned a doctorate in oceanography from the University of Hawaii, also in 2003.
