CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sarah Cooley, a junior majoring in both computer science and electrical and computer engineering at Oregon State University, has received a Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, one of only 20 students in the nation to win this honor.

The $10,000 award, given to women majoring in computer science or computer engineering, is for the 2009-10 academic year.

Cooley, from Pleasanton, Calif., chose to attend OSU after learning about the university’s strengths in research for undergraduate students, the Open Source Lab, and the College of Engineering’s solar vehicle challenge team. She immediately got a job at the Open Source Lab and worked on the One Laptop per Child project.

She is a teaching assistant for a computer science course, is still active in the open source education lab, and helps represent the College of Engineering during high school visits and other outreach activities.

Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarships are given to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders in the field.
