CORVALLIS, Ore. - The JumpstART program at Oregon State University, a pre-college visual and performing arts program, will present a gallery of student work at its farewell reception at 7 p.m. Friday, July 9. This free public event will be held in Fairbanks Hall on the OSU campus.

JumpstART is offered to high school students during the summers after their freshman through senior years in high school. The intent is to help students create work that will be worthy of a portfolio used to get into a college art program. JumpstART instructors are all artists and include faculty from the OSU department of art as well as visiting artist instructors.

Sponsored by the Department of Art at OSU, JumpstART is in its 14th summer program, which started this year on June 20. There are 27 high school students attending this summer who come from all areas of Oregon as well as from California.

JumpstART 2010 features classes in figure drawing, graphic design, beginning painting, advanced painting, modeling the human figure, printmaking, and sculpture. Students focus on two courses every weekday throughout the three weeks. The students' efforts throughout the program are evaluated the final day during individual portfolio reviews with the many professional artists and teachers who serve as instructors in the program.

Teaching in this year's program are: Ben Buswell (Portland Community College-Rock Creek, sculpture), Kathryn Cellerini (State University of New York, figure drawing),  Jeremy Covert (University of Oregon adjunct faculty, beginning painting), Lorraine Dauw (Yale University, advanced painting), Christine Gallagher (OSU faculty, graphic design), Yuji Hiratsuka (OSU faculty, printmaking), and Kim Smith (School of Visual Arts, New York City, modeling the human figure).

Evenings and weekends include presentations and workshops from artists in a range of disciplines and media. Some of this year's guests include Rick Bartow (painting and sculpture), Clint Brown (painting and drawing), Marianne Egan (recycled fashion), Jon Lewis (film history and screenwriting), Katherine Sanders (dance) and Eric Steen (performance).

Weekends also include excursions to the beach for a sand sculpture competition and to the Portland Art Museum and art galleries in Portland's Pearl District. This year's sand sculpture competition will be held on Sunday, July 4, with members of the Yaquina Art Association serving as judges.

Scholarships to attend future JumpstART programs, as well as toward OSU tuition for graduating seniors, will be announced at the closing reception on July 9. Selected students will also receive recognition for outstanding portfolio work created in the program.
