CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's forensics team kept its successful season going at Mt. Hood Community College this past weekend, with major wins in individual events and debate.
The Pi Kappa Delta Tournament of the Great West featured more than 20 schools from across the United States, including the College of Southern Idaho, Clarke College, and Webster University of St. Louis, Mo.
"Going into the national leg of the season, these sorts of wins are important," said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team. "The students get feedback on what to improve while they celebrate their successes as a team."
Porrovecchio said this particular tournament uses an older system of ranking; instead of first place prizes, speakers are ranked as "superior," "excellent" and "good."
The team wins began in individual events. Loni Sturm of Albany received excellent rankings in open persuasive and open extemporaneous speaking. In open impromptu speaking Morgan Mansker of Sisters received a superior ranking, while David Kubota of Forest Grove, Kyle Bidwell of Sumner, Wash., Forest Ledbetter of Sheridan, and Dalicia Fennell of Albany brought home excellent rankings. In novice impromptu speaking, newcomers Callia Palioca of Happy Valley, Nate Tardiff of Scappoose, and Patrick Chambers of Redmond all took home excellent rankings. Chambers also received an excellent ranking in novice informative speaking.
The team's strong showing continued in International Public Debate Association debate. Bidwell took home a superior rank in open debate, while Daniel Meiwes of Corvallis as well as Sturm, Fennell, and Ledbetter all took home excellent rankings. In novice debate, newcomer Robert Fix of Gresham received a superior rank and Mayuko Miyamoto of Tokyo earned a good rank for a 4-3 record.
As a reward for their outstanding showing, the OSU forensics team earned excellent rankings in the Four-Year College Debate, Individual Events, Novice Events, and Combined Events Categories.
