PENDLETON, Ore. - Oregon State University's Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center and the United States Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service will co-host free public field days next month at the Pendleton Ag Research Center and the Sherman Experiment Station.

The events give participants a chance to tour the facilities and hear presentations on research. Presentations will cover a variety of topics aimed at producers and anyone with an interest in agriculture.

The Pendleton Ag Research Center field day will take place Tuesday, June 14, at the center, located six miles northeast of Pendleton and a mile east of Highway 11. Scientists will present information on biennial canola; safflower production; stripe rust control; diagnosing wheat diseases; winter wheat and club wheat varieties; winter barleys; downy brome control; soil organic matter dynamics; and the importance of soil microbes.

Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. and tours begin at 8:15 a.m. A hosted lunch is provided at noon. Tours will end at 2:45 p.m. with an ice cream social sponsored by the Oregon Wheat Growers League.

The Sherman Experiment Station field day will take place Wednesday, June 15. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at Sherman High School, 65912 High School Loop, a half mile southwest of Moro. Tours begin at 7:40 a.m. and leave from the school.

Presentation topics include the economics of conventional and direct seed cropping systems; oil seed production; winter wheat and club wheat varieties; stripe rust control; diagnosing wheat diseases; effects of tillage on water storage and seedzone moisture; and carryover effects of Beyond herbicide on later wheat crops. A hosted lunch at noon will conclude the day.

Participants will be able to get Washington and Oregon pesticide recertification credits at either event.
