CORVALLIS, Ore. - David Luft, the Horning Endowed Professor of Science and Humanities at Oregon State University, will speak on the relationship between German culture in the 18th century and the emergence of a modern Czech culture.

His lecture begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the Memorial Union Journey Room. The event is part of the 2011-12 Horning Lecture Series, which is focused on modern European intellectual history.

In his lecture, "The Birth of Modern Czech out of the Spirit of the Austrian Enlightenment," Luft will emphasize the relationship between cosmopolitan German culture in the middle of the 18th century and the emergence of modern Czech in a time before modern nationalism existed.

This relationship between the German language and Czech culture is known but, according to Luft, rarely celebrated.
