CORVALLIS, Ore. - Kay Redfield Jamison, an international authority on mood disorders, will deliver a talk at Oregon State University on Oct. 24 that focuses on her research in the area of mental health.

She will also lead a discussion at OSU on Oct. 25 based on her book, "An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness."

Jamison is a researcher who also has suffered from manic depression and writes intimately about her experiences. Her free public lecture will address clinical and personal realities of depression and bipolar disorder. The talk begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the Austin Auditorium of LaSells Stewart Center.

Her public book discussion, followed by a question-and-answer session and book signing, takes place Oct. 25 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., in the CH2M-Hill ballroom. The book follows Jamison's struggle with manic-depressive illness as she was pursuing her psychiatric training.

Jamison is professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as well as honorary professor of English at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

In addition to "An Unquiet Mind" Jamison also wrote "Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide" and "Touched with Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament." She is co-author of a medical text on manic-depressive illness and author or co-author of more than 100 scientific papers about mood disorders, creativity and psychopharmacology.

She was distinguished lecturer at Harvard University in 2002 and the Litchfield lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2003. She is a John P. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellow.
