CORVALLIS, Ore. - The public is invited to help with an art installation going up on the Oregon State University campus during the next three weeks.

Artist Patrick Dougherty builds large temporary structures out of thousands of sticks, tree trunks and stems. He weaves the sticks in a method employed by wicker furniture makers. Based out of Chapel Hill, N.C., Dougherty has created more than 200 of these installations around the world.

The College of Liberal Arts has commissioned this project, which will be put up in People's Park, on the west side of Gilkey Hall. Stephen Hayes, an adjunct art instructor at OSU, said Triple D Farm in Albany donated all the willow to be used for the project, which will begin Oct. 3 with the gathering of materials and ends Oct. 22.

Hayes said volunteers who are interested in helping with material gathering, sorting, preparation or assisting on the art project can contact him at [email protected] or go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/stickwork

The art installation is expected to stay up at least one to two years, and will eventually decay. Dougherty tends to create the art in the moment, so the OSU installation will be inspired by its location.

Filmmakers Penelope Maunsell and Kenny Dalsheimer will release a feature-length documentary about Dougherty this year.
