CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sonny Montes, co-founder of Colegio Cesar Chavez, and Glenn May, author of a new book about Montes, will speak at events on the campuses of Oregon State University and the University of Oregon, focusing on Mexican-American activism.

May's book, "Sonny Montes and Mexican American Activism in Oregon," was published this summer by the OSU Press.

Montes and May will speak at OSU on Thursday, Sept. 29, beginning at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Journey Room, and at UO on Friday, Sept. 30, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in 110 Law School. A book signing will follow both events.

Colegio Cesar Chavez, located in Mt. Angel, Ore., is the first accredited four-year Chicano college in the United States and Montes was a key figure in the birth of the Chicano movement in Oregon in the 1970s. That movement and the founding of the college are chronicled in the book by May.

Joining Montes and May at the two lectures will be John Little, executive director of the Valley Migrant League, and Jose Romero, co-director of Colegio Cesar Chavez.

Both events are free and open to the public. They are sponsored by numerous groups on the respective campuses.
