CORVALLIS, Ore. - Pioneering rock musicians June Millington and her sister Jean will be at Oregon State University on Oct. 6 for a talk and a free concert open to the community.

The talk begins at 4 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 109 and the free public concert and CD release will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union ballroom.

The Millington sisters are founding members of the band Fanny, which was one of the first all-female rock bands signed to a major label in the 1960s.  They are celebrating the release of their new studio album "Play Like a Girl."

From 1969 until1974, Fanny released albums and toured internationally, sharing the stage with bands such as Chicago, Dr. John, the Staple Singers and Jethro Tull. David Bowie said of the group: "They were extraordinary. They are as important as anyone else who's ever been, ever ..."

June and Jean began playing together again in 1984. The third key member of their ensemble is Jean's son, Lee Madeloni, who picked up his first album credit when he was 14. Madeloni will play drums on tour with the group.

 In 1987, June co-founded the nonprofit Institute for the Musical Arts, a teaching, performing and recording facility dedicated to supporting women and girls in music.

During their talk at OSU, the Millington sisters will discuss women in rock, and specifically their own experiences as pioneering musicians. They will also be at Linus Pauling Middle School on Oct. 5.

The event is part of the American Culture and Politics series, sponsored by the Horning Endowment. Cosponsors include Women Studies and the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs, as well as the Women's Center and the Pride Center.
