SEATTLE - Pacific Northwest leaders of the nation's leading association serving educational professionals in the areas of communications, development and allied areas have honored Oregon State University Foundation CEO J. Michael Goodwin with the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of contributions throughout his successful career in higher education.

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) presented the award last Friday as part of its District VIII conference in Seattle. In addition, Oregon State received 11 communications awards at the annual event.

Goodwin has headed the OSU Foundation since 2004, and has led its record-setting Campaign for OSU. That first-ever comprehensive campaign for OSU has already exceeded its original goal of $625 million, and at nearly $800 million in donations, is closing in quickly on the expanded target of $850 million. A long list of new buildings, more than $135 million in scholarships and dozens of endowed faculty positions are among the many dimensions of the campaign's success.

In addition to his service to OSU, Goodwin is a board member for the Portland Business Alliance and The Oregon Idea, as well as treasurer for the CASE Board of Trustees. Prior to joining OSU, Goodwin served as vice president for alumni and university relations at Georgetown University, where he led its most successful fund raising effort ever, bringing in more than $1 billion. Before his work at Georgetown, Goodwin held leadership positions at Washington State University, where he directed the first comprehensive campaign in the university's history.

"Mike's vision for what private support could make possible at OSU has been transformative in the way that it has captivated and inspired donors," said Oregon State President Edward J. Ray. "The team that he assembled to conduct The Campaign for OSU is quite simply one of the best in higher education, and our students, faculty and university overall will benefit for many generations to come from the work that Mike has led. CASE could not have picked a more worthy recipient for this honor."

In addition to Goodwin's award, OSU received three Gold awards at the conference, including Advertising Spots and Public Service Announcements for Oregon State Healthy People TV, and Student Recruitment Videos for "Relentless: The Global Formula Racing Team Pursuit of Perfection," both from University Relations and Marketing; and Special Constituency and Research Magazines for Oregon's Agricultural Progress magazine, from OSU Extension and Experiment Station Communications.

University Relations and Marketing won two Silvers (one in conjunction with the College of Public Health and Human Sciences) and two Bronzes. OSU Extension and Experiment Station Communications also won one Silver and one Bronze award, while the OSU Foundation won a Silver (in conjunction with University Relations and Marketing) and a Bronze.
