CORVALLIS, Ore. - Four Oregon State University students picked up medals at the Greater Portland Intercollegiate Debate League Tournament, including a gold medal for new team member Cody Connolly of Honolulu.

OSU Forensics co-hosted the debate, which was held at Mt. Hood Community College and featured schools from around the Pacific Northwest.

In addition to his gold medal, Connolly also was named second best speaker in novice international public debate.

Michael Walters of Gresham received a bronze medal and fourth best speaker award in open international public debate for OSU. Teammate Jana Hodgins of Clackamas was recognized as a bronze medalist in open international debate; Esther Rodriguez of Woodburn received a bronze medal in novice international public debate.

"We are only a few weeks away from national-level debate competitions," said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the OSU forensics team. "This tournament provides us with a chance to shake off the holiday dust while competing against great schools from Oregon and Washington."

The team was coached by graduate assistant Kori Thornburg of Kennewick, Wash., and assisted by former competitor Kyle Bidwell of Sumner, Wash.

Celebrating its 119th season, OSU Forensics is open to all students in good academic standing. For information, contact Porrovecchio at [email protected].
