CORVALLIS, Ore. - Two national magazine editors will discuss the ins and outs of magazine writing, editing, and the creative process at an Oregon State University-sponsored panel discussion called "The Editorial Connection: Editor-Writers on Magazine Writing and Publishing."

The discussion, followed by a question-and-answer session, is scheduled for Thursday, May 31, at The Arts Center, 700 S.W. Madison. The free public program, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is the last event in the 2012 OSU Visiting Writers Series.

Drawing from their decades of experience as professional writers and editors, panelists Jim Babb and Brian Kellow will discuss their creative work, share behind-the-scenes stories on magazine publishing, and offer advice for prospective freelance writers. Dionisia Morales, an essayist and recent alumna of the OSU Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing, will moderate the session.

Kellow, an OSU alumnus, is features editor of Opera News magazine and author of four biographies. His newest book, "Pauline Kael: A Life in the Dark," (Viking, 2011) is the first biography of the acclaimed American film critic. His articles have appeared in magazines and newspapers including Travel and Leisure, BBC Music Magazine, and Newsday.

Babb is editor of Gray's Sporting Journal and the author of the essay collections "Crosscurrents: A Fly Fisher's Progress," "River Music: A Fly Fisher's Four Seasons," and "Fly-Fishin' Fool: The Adventures, Misadventures, and Outright Idiocies of a Compulsive Angler." He lives in Maine where he writes, fishes, and is at work on his first novel.

This public discussion is part of OSU's 2012 Editorial Festival, an annual gathering of prominent editors and writers created to engage students and community members in a discussion about contemporary writing, publishing, and media studies. It is sponsored by the proposed School of Writing, Literature, and Film with contributions from The Valley Library, the Office of the Provost, the College of Liberal Arts, Kathy Brisker and Tim Steele, and the OSU Beaver Store.
