CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 13th annual Engineering Expo, featuring student projects that range from across all engineering disciplines, will be held this Friday, May 18, at the College of Engineering at Oregon State University.

The senior design showcase with more than 100 student-built projects is combined with a "Robo*Palooza," and the event is free and open to the public. It will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kelley Engineering Center on the OSU campus. Tours of the Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory are also available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More information on the event is available online at http://engineering.oregonstate.edu/expo2012 by calling 541-737-3101.

The various displays offer an entertaining learning opportunity for anyone, organizers say, and may be of particular interest to high school students who are considering a career in engineering.

"The Engineering Expo showcases our emphasis on hands-on experience," said Scott Ashford, interim dean of the College of Engineering. "The senior design project is just one of the many examples of how the OSU engineering education prepares our graduates to make a seamless transition into their careers.

"OSU has one of the nation's largest and most productive engineering programs, with more than 4,000 undergraduates, world-class research, and state-of-the-art facilities." Ashford added.

Among the various displays will be:

  • An automated brewing system that makes beer-brewing as simple as baking a loaf of bread in a breadmaker;
  • A unique approach to transportation that replaces pedals and the steering wheel with a game controller;
  • A soil additive that could mitigate contamination from the Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan;
  • A 360-degree video player that lets users fully immerse themselves into the game and interact with the images;
  • A new approach to compostable cutlery that could reduce breakdown time to a matter of weeks.
