CAMP ADAIR, Ore. - Oregon State University's Army ROTC unit is hosting the annual Ranger Challenge competition in Monmouth and Camp Adair on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Ranger Challenge is an annual competition between Army ROTC units from Pacific region universities. Each unit puts forth a team of nine cadets who compete in various graded events.

These events include a tactical obstacle course, combat first aid skills, weapons assembly, one-rope bridge, the Army Physical Fitness Test, land navigation, and a 10-kilometer road march.

The team with the best time will compete in the brigade finals in early 2013.

Participating universities are from Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and California. The challenge is designed to test cadets' mental and physical toughness, event organizers say. Its goal is to develop leadership while fostering teamwork and esprit-de-corps under physically and mentally demanding conditions.

Participating cadets earn the Ranger Challenge Tab, a mark of recognition within the U.S. Army Cadet Command.

The first portion of the day-long event takes place from 6 to 10 a.m. at the Oregon Military Academy in Monmouth, 701 Monmouth Ave., N. The second portion takes place on Rifle Range Road in Camp Adair, from 10 a.m. until dark.
