CORVALLIS, Ore. - Veterinary medicine students at Oregon State University are hosting a fun run and walk on Sunday, Oct. 14, to benefit animals in Corvallis' sister city of Uzhgorod, Ukraine.

There will be a 9-kilometer run ("K-9") beginning at 9 a.m., and a 5-kilometer fun run and walk beginning at 9:30 a.m. Registration is $17 on race day, or $15 for pre-registration by Oct. 7. Proceeds from the run will be used to promote animal well-being in Uzhgorod in one of two ways, said Ali McKay, secretary of the student Shelter Medicine Club in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

"Our goal is to raise funds to send U.S. veterinarians to Uzhgorod to help with education, as well as spaying and neutering efforts, or put the money toward the building of Uzhgorod's first animal shelter," McKay said. "Uzhgorod doesn't have any animal shelters and humane treatment of animals is lacking throughout much of Ukraine."

A limited number of T-shirts will be available to persons who pre-register. Completed registration forms may be turned in at Magruder Hall. Registration during the day of the run will begin at 7:30 a.m.

This is one of several outreach efforts by OSU veterinary medicine students. The event is sponsored by the Shelter Medicine Club and the International Veterinary Student Association.
