CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's forensics team hosted the first Greater Portland Intercollegiate Debate League Scrimmage of 2013 on the OSU campus recently.

The scrimmage, a chance for regional programs to compete in a one-day tournament format, featured Northwest schools such as Mt. Hood Community College in Portland, and Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash.

"It is nice to start the second part of the season with a regional warm-up," said Mark Porrovecchio, director of the team. "It was also nice to see a novice and a senior recognized for their talents."

Brittany Williams of Klamath Falls took first place in novice international public debate and was recognized as the fourth best overall speaker. Cody Connolly of Salem was recognized as fifth best speaker in open international public debate.

The competition team was rounded out by Mike Springer of Rockaway Beach and Evan Steele of Concord, Calif. The team was coached by graduate assistant Kori Thornburg of Kennewick, Wash., and assisted by team alumni Forest Ledbetter of Sheridan, Ore.

Celebrating its 120th season, OSU Forensics is one of the oldest clubs on campus. The team is open to all students in good academic standing.
