CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University and the American Ornithologists' Union will co-host a day-long symposium on Saturday, Jan. 30, designed to share information about birds to professionals, students and amateurs.

The Willamette Valley Bird Symposium 2016 will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the CH2M-Hill Alumni Center on the OSU campus. Registration is $15 for students, educators and American Ornithologists Union members, and $20 for others.

Daniel Roby, the wildlife unit leader for the Oregon Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at OSU, is the keynote speaker. His presentation, "Restoring Seabird Colonies Using Social Interactions," begins at 9:30 a.m. and will focus on puffins. Roby is also known for his work in helping to relocate Caspian terns from locations on the Columbia River to sites inland.

A series of short, scientific presentations on a variety of topics related to birds will be presented throughout the day. The topics include evolution of flight, using created snags for bird habitat, migration patterns of hummingbirds, wintering habitat of geese, disappearing birds in Panama, and mercury in piscivorous birds.

There also will be a display of live birds from the Chintimini Wildlife Center and demonstrations of avian research techniques throughout the day.
