“They have produced a nice signal of the release of freshwater into the Arctic Ocean, but the conclusions are based on an uncertain chronology which, when trying to tie together events so closely, requires some independent confirmation," Peter Clark, an Oregon State University geoscientist who has published evidence supporting the St. Lawrence River theory, said in an email.
Neutrinos are important because they convey information across time and space. “It basically says the plume is on its way, that’s the leading indicator… PFOS and PFOA is likely on the way to your house,” said Jennifer Field, a professor of environmental and molecular toxicology at Oregon State University. Field is a leading expert on test methods for PFAS compounds. The Department of Defense helps fund her research. “If you are on the hydrological flow path it’s a matter of time and distance.”
“We’re still digging in our heels like we always have and we’re just going after it more and more and more, rather than backing off and taking a different assessment,” said Chris Dunn, who studies fire at Oregon State University.
Genetic research at Oregon State University has shed new light on how isolated populations of the same species evolve toward reproductive incompatibility and thus become separate species.
The study, published today in the journal PLOS ONE, also concludes that the subspecies are interbreeding. Researchers at Oregon State University, University of California San Diego and University of Colorado-Boulder collaborated on the study.
"If we sampled in the river it would clog all of our filters," said microbiologist Grace Klinges, who studies samples from the Tara as part of her graduate work at Oregon State University.
Thomas Maness, who served as dean of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University since 2012, died Thursday in Corvallis. He was 63.
The Oregon Historical Society and Oregon State University recently collaborated on a project to collect and digitize much of the work of Finley and his colleagues. The study is published in the journal Ecosphere by researchers at Oregon State University and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The research builds on an OSU study that determined that bears are the primary seed dispersers of berry-producing shrubs in Alaska.
Senators Jeff Merkley, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Agriculture subcommittee, and Ron Wyden announced Thursday that a nearly half-million dollar U.S. Department of Agriculture grant was awarded to Oregon State University for research on the durability of cross-laminated timber, an innovative product that is helping to advance wood as a construction material for tall buildings.
A group of kids from the Boys & Girls Club of the Western Treasure Valley perused the various booths set up around the space. They were joined by local families and agriculture professionals from across the area looking to take a glimpse into the current offerings for the agriculture industry on Wednesday during the annual Oregon State University Malheur Experiment Station Field Day.
Lauren Brubaker, a Ph.D. student at Oregon State University specializing in human-animal interactions, said the study also matches the experience of people in the horseback riding world. “You hear a lot of riders and instructors and trainers who will say they’re looking for horses to do that snorting behavior while they’re riding because they believe the horses are relaxing and releasing adrenaline,” she said.
"I was really impressed with how green it was," said Lisa Ellsworth, a fire ecologist from Oregon State University who accompanied Jennings on the flight.
A new pest has burst on the scene at Oregon State University’s North Willamette Research and Extension Center.
Thursday's river trip was just one of the program's summer activities and was part of the Environmental Leadership for Youth camp, held June 26-29 at Oregon State University. The four-day camp let participants get a glimpse of college life while sleeping in dorms and attending classes through the university's Fisheries and Wildlife Department.

2018 Dry Farming Field Days: The Oregon State University Extension Small Farms Program is organizing several Dry Farming Field Days this summer. More than 30 sites throughout western Oregon and Washington are hosting trials this year and three of them will be hosting tours. OSMSC Undergraduate/Graduate Proteomics Summer Research Opportunity: The Oregon State University Mass Spectrometry Center (OSMSC) is offering proteomics research opportunities during summer of 2018 for undergraduate/graduate research projects. Accepted students will conduct their proposed research during the summer term with the technical support provided by OSMSC. The OSMSC will waive the training fee for all accepted students and will provide an allowance of total eight hours of free mass spectrometer instrument time and data analysis time to each student for the conduct of their summer research. Fiscal Policy – Rule 03-120-404 Relocation Allowance replaces FIS 415 Relocation and Moving. Due to recent tax law changes, all payments made to employees related to moving and relocation are now 100 percent tax reportable and subject to income tax withholdings. This new policy provides a relocation allowance, if included in the employee offer, rather than a reimbursement requiring additional documentation. Employees with outstanding relocations for offers made prior to this new policy will be notified within the next 30-60 days, and arrangements will be made to finalize all payments.
Fiscal Policy – Rule 03-140-206 Procurement Cards replaces FIS 408-01 Procurement Cards. This new policy covers all procurement cards, including PCards, Travel & Expense Cards and Group Travel Cards. The intent of the policy is to modify and update the existing card options.
Fiscal Policy – Rule 03-140-503 Memberships, Dues and Subscriptions replaces FIS 410-06 Memberships and Dues and FIS 410-14 Subscriptions. The primary purpose of this new policy is to reformat to our new structure, and includes only minor revisions.

Use of Drones/Unmanned Aircraft Systems for OSU operations and research: As of May 15, 2018, the OSU special authorization, known as the “COA,” to fly Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for research purposes expired but OSU can continue to operate under Small Unmanned Aircraft Regulations Part 107. Going forward all OSU community members must fly under the oversight of an individual who has a “part 107” FAA remote pilot’s license, if that flight is for official OSU activity, including research. Additionally to obtain liability and insurance coverage through OSU, the flight operations must be logged with the OSU flight log system, found at: http://research.oregonstate.edu/uas-osu/unmanned-aerial-systems-oregon-state-university/uas-flight-reporting. OSU seeks to support the OSU UAS community and provides free access to training to prepare for the Part 107 remote pilot test and will also provide a licensed pilot for research use, if needed.
