CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s School of Arts and Communication presents “Brooklyn Rider & Kayhan Kalhor: Silent City” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24, in the Austin Auditorium at The LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th Street.

Brooklyn Rider is a New York City-based string quartet founded in 2008 that draws heavily on influences beyond the traditional classical realm. The group has collaborated with banjoist and composer Bela Fleck, singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane and jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman, among others. The quartet’s recordings include works by John Adams, Bjork, Sting, Elvis Costello and more.

Kayhan Kalhor is a GRAMMY-nominated composer and performer known throughout the world as a master of traditional Iranian and Kurdish music. He performs on the kamancheh, a traditional Iranian string instrument commonly used in Iranian and Kurdish classical music.

Kalhor is a founding member of Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. He has collaborated with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and New York’s Mostly Mozart Festival. Additionally, he has worked with some of the most important composers of our time including Osvaldo Golijov, John Adams and Caroline Shaw.

The program includes two works by quartet member Colin Jacobsen: “A Mirror For A Prince” and “Beloved, do not let me be discouraged.” Jacobsen is a United States Artists Fellowship recipient and an Avery Fisher Career Grant winner. Jacobsen’s works bookend the seventh string quartet by renowned American minimalist composer Phillip Glass.

After intermission, Kalhor will perform an extended Persian kamanchech improvisation before being joined by Brooklyn Rider for a performance of “Silent City,” an extended elegy by Kalhor written in response to the destruction of the Kurdish city of Halabja.
