Oregon State University is reporting a 15% year-over-year increase in research expenditures. Research expenditures increased to $422 million in fiscal year 2024, up from $367 million in 2023.
“Our record-setting research expenditures reflect the deep expertise of OSU researchers and our commitment to making big discoveries that have a positive and lasting impact in Oregon, the nation and the world,” said Oregon State University President Jayathi Murthy. “This helps ensure a growing research and innovation portfolio well into the future.”
Research expenditures include federal, state of Oregon, other government and foundation restricted funds. The 2024 Research and Innovation Annual Report, released by the Division of Research and Innovation, includes additional data and highlights from the past year.
“I am thrilled at the progress we are making toward reaching our goal of increasing our annual research expenditures to $600 million by 2030,” said Irem Tumer, vice president for research and innovation, referring to the goal set in Prosperity Widely Shared, the university’s strategic plan. “These expenditures represent significant investments being made by the university and our funding partners to advance knowledge and address some of the world’s most pressing issues.”
To support this growth, the university is investing in strengthening research support infrastructure and offering research advancement opportunities including the Research Advancement Academy and the Transdisciplinary Research Seed Funding competition.
As part of the newly launched Prosperity Widely Shared, Oregon State is focusing on transdisciplinary work that results in solutions and impact to the people and communities the university serves while building foundational strength in artificial intelligence, data science and research computing. Additionally, work is being done to consolidate infrastructure to better support scholarship, creative work and research in the arts and humanities as they intersect with the four research priority areas:
- Climate science
- Clean energy
- Robotics
- Integrated health and biotechnology.
Over the next year, the Division of Research and Innovation will continue building the infrastructure and systems needed to support research growth across the university.
