CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Chamber Choir and the OSU Black Tie Ensemble will give a free public concert on Thursday, March 14, beginning at noon in OSU's Memorial Union Lounge. This is the last winter term concert of the Music a la Carte concert series.

The Black Tie Ensemble consists of eight select singers performing jazz favorites. Jeff Loats, a doctoral student majoring in physics, conducts the ensemble. Their performance will include "Straighten Up and Fly Right" featuring Joe Battrick, a vocal performance major.

The Chamber Choir will perform "Factus est silentium," by the Renaissance composer Richard Deering, and "Ejszaka" and "Reggel" by the Hungarian avant-garde composer, Gyorgy Ligeti. These unusual and ambitious compositions provide a soundscape depicting the stillness of night and the stridency and crispness of a new morning.

The Chamber Choir will also present two of Samuel Barber's "Reincarnations," "Vamuvamba," an African composition, and a gospel song, "Praise His Holy Name." The two latter compositions are published by Earthsongs, a publishing company based in Corvallis and led by former OSU director of choral studies, Ron Jeffers.

Steven M. Zielke, director of choral studies at OSU, conducts the OSU Chamber Choir. The choir is the premier choral organization on the OSU campus and consists both of students preparing for careers in music education and vocal performance, and of talented musicians from throughout the OSU community.
