CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University archivist Larry Landis has been selected as a recipient of an Oregon Heritage Excellence Award.

Landis, who has been university archivist at OSU since December 1996, will be presented with his award – in the Archivist or Collection Curator category – on Friday, May 4, at the Oregon Heritage Conference in Pendleton. Mary Oberst, wife of Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, will make the presentation.

“We in the OSU Libraries are delighted to learn that Larry will be receiving this award,” University Librarian Karyle Butcher said. “It is certainly as great honor to him and a wonderful recognition of his work to preserve the heritage of our state. We are extraordinarily proud.”

Landis oversees all of the functions of the University Archives, a department of the OSU Libraries. The OSU Archives program collects, preserves and provides access to the historical records of the university; extensive visual collections (more than 400,000 photographs and more than 6,000 motion picture films and videotapes); the papers of OSU faculty and alumni; records of OSU-affiliated organizations; and numerous oral histories.

He was instrumental in the establishment of the Northwest Digital Archives in 2002 and has led the efforts to establish the Oregon Multicultural Archives in the OSU Libraries.

Landis came to OSU in January 1991 as assistant university archivist, previously working at the Barker Texas History Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Heritage Excellence Awards recognize individuals, businesses and organizations for outstanding efforts on behalf of Oregon heritage.
