CORVALLIS, Ore. - Six students from Oregon State University have received 2008-09 U.S. Student Fulbright awards, a record number for OSU.

The students will use their awards to study and conduct research abroad. These merit-based fellowships are awarded annually to recent bachelor's graduates, master and doctoral students, young professionals and artists, according to Marit Legler, of OSU's International Programs.

The Fulbright program is sponsored by the United States government to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." About 1,200 students are selected annually from a nationwide pool of applicants.

OSU's 2008-09 recipients are:

Dallas, Ore.

  • Sarah E. Gallup, an M.A. student in English (rhetoric and writing) received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to France.

Eugene

  • Christina Murphy, a senior in biology and fisheries and wildlife, and an international degree and University Honors College student, received a Fulbright Award to Chile to conduct research at the ECIM Marine Laboratory in Las Cruces.
  • Alison Newman, a graduate student in international public health, received a Fulbright Award to Sri Lanka to conduct research on rural maternal health.
  • Seth White, a doctoral student in fisheries science, received a Fulbright Award to the Czech Republic to conduct research on "fish community dynamics in regulated rivers of the Morava basin."

Portland

  • Robbie Lamb, a senior in marine biology, and an international degree and University Honors College student, received a Fulbright Award to Ecuador to work with the NAZCA Marine Science Institute, a marine resource management and biological research organization based in Quito.

Roseville, Calif.

  • Matt Hawkyard, an M.S. student in fisheries science, received a Fulbright Award to Norway to conduct research on "enrichment of vitamins within Artemia brine shrimp for feed to marine larval fish" at the National Institute for Nutrition and Seafood Research in Bergen.
