CORVALLIS, Ore. - This statement is intended to provide facts regarding the alleged activities of a 19-year-old man arrested by FBI agents on Friday night in conjunction with a plot to detonate a bomb in downtown Portland. Contrary to initial reports circulating today, the individual in custody is not an Oregon State University student.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud formerly attended OSU beginning in fall 2009, but has not been enrolled since Oct. 6 of this year. He was a "non-degree" student, meaning he had not been formally admitted to the university to pursue a degree program, but was instead taking individual courses. His coursework spanned the Fall 2009 and Winter 2010 quarters, and he had not taken additional courses until this fall's quarter, which began in late-September, but then dropped all his courses in early October.

Mohamud began taking courses as a non-degree student at OSU after graduating high school in Portland, and lived at an off-campus location in Corvallis.

FBI investigators worked with Oregon State Police (the law enforcement authority for OSU's main campus in Corvallis) and the Corvallis Police Department, among others, on the investigation that resulted in Mohamud's arrest.

Further information on Mohamud and his arrest is available from the FBI. Media are encouraged to contact Beth Ann Steele at (503) 552-5238 or [email protected].
