Fatemeh Fakhraie, a graduate and employee of OSU, will give a talk and reading from her new anthology on the experience of being an American Muslim woman on Monday, May 23 in downtown Corvallis.

Fakhraie has published an essay in the new anthology "I Speak for Myself: American Women on Being Muslim." She will give a talk and reading at Grass Roots Books & Music, 227 S.W. 2nd St. The free public event begins at 7 p.m., with a book signing to follow.

Fakhraie is an editor, author, and blogger who explores contemporary issues from her perspective as an American-Iranian Muslim woman. She writes about Islamic feminism, Islam, politics, and race for several online and print outlets, including Racialicious, Bitch, and AltMuslimah. She founded Muslimah Media Watch in 2007 and currently serves as editor-in-chief.

"I Speak for Myself" is a collection of 40 personal essays written by American Muslim women under the age of 40, all of whom were born and raised in the United States. Each personal story is a contribution to the larger narrative of life stories and life work of a new generation of Muslim women.

The book has already been endorsed by prominent cultural figures including Deepak Chopra, Muhammad Yunus, Queen Noor, Jim Wallis, Eboo Patel, Soledad O'Brien and many more.
