Scientists are racing to understand the Aleutian tern's mysterious decline (Audubon Magazine)

Food—a lack of high-quality prey, specifically—could be a big contributor to the birds’ decline. As a graduate student at Oregon State University, Jill Tengeres studied what affects the species’ nest survival. “They’re not giving up their secrets very easily, but we’re finding ways to learn more about them, so we can help them,” Tengeres says.
 

Fossil bug-eyed insect is weird enough to merit its own distinct family (New Atlas)

Measuring just over 5 mm long, the insect was found in Burma, encased in 100-million-year-old amber (fossilized tree resin). Oregon State University's Prof. George Poinar Jr., leader of a study on the find, has named it Palaeotanyrhina exophthalma. The first part of that monicker refers to the Palaeotanyrhinidae family, which Poinar created after determining that the insect didn't fit into any existing families. (see also CNET)

New Indigenous studies minor paves path for Native students at Oregon State (Oregonian)

Even as its counterparts in the Pacific Northwest allowed their students to achieve a degree in Indigenous studies, Oregon State University for years did not. The university offered only a handful of classes in the subject. Even in recent years, as the school’s administrators began to acknowledge the demand for a focus on Indigenous studies, there were few visible changes for students.  That is until this year, at least, when the university hired three Indigenous faculty on tenure tracks, doubling the program’s full-time faculty.

Oregon State University will receive nearly $350,000 to monitor mercury levels in the  waters of the Willamette River Valley. The Willamette River is a major tributary to the Columbia River. University scientists will team up with local communities to study trends in mercury contamination, identify sources of pollution and determine safer fishing practices. They will also work with community scientists to sample dragonfly larvae for mercury, which have proven to be good indicators of the presence of mercury pollution.
 

OSU-Cascades says program helps first-generation, low income students (Bend Bulletin)

Kylee Linnell always pictured herself going to college, but the 19-year-old’s journey to Oregon State University-Cascades in Bend was marked repeatedly by struggle. Linnell, who will be a sophomore in the fall, came to the campus in 2021 after being accepted into the college’s TRIO program, which provides counseling and guidance to low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities.

I populated it with 6 lbs of honey bees and a queen. The photos show the honey comb (which is snow white naturally to begin with) the bees build within a three-week period.”

Emeritus Associate Professor Firth has died: James Firth, an associate professor emeritus of the College of Education at Oregon State University, died Aug. 1. He was 82. In 1973 he took a position as an assistant professor at Oregon State, where he later became the department chair of the education and counseling department. A Celebration of Life will be held at Musgrove’s Memorial Chapel in Eugene on Saturday, Aug. 20, 11 a.m. You are invited to sign the guestbook at musgroves.com

Traffic and Maintenance

Power outage: For work related to the Cordley Hall Renewal Project, a planned power outage is scheduled from 5-7 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, for the following buildings on Oregon State University’s Corvallis campus (view map): Ballard Extension, Cordley Hall- East side, Gilmore Hall, Nash Hall, Withycombe Hall, Women’s Building. Cordley Hall sidewalk: As part of the Cordley Hall Renewal Project, the north/south sidewalk on the east side of Cordley Hall between Cordley Hall, Bates Hall and the Hallie E.
