Oregon State University scientists analyzed more than four decades of data and determined that quakes of magnitude 6.5 or larger can cause other, far-away quakes of magnitude 5.0 or larger in the days that follow. (see also NewsweekKTVZ)
 

When it comes to wildfire, politics lag behind science (OPB)

John Bailey, a forestry professor and fire expert at Oregon State University, said contrary to what Smokey Bear and the U.S. Forest Service once told us, “there is no smoke-free future” in western U.S. forests. We either use fire as a tool to help clear out the dense undergrowth, he said, or we wait for it to be done by explosive wildfires driven by the worst weather conditions.

The Oregon State University Board of Trustees has approved a new nursing degree at OSU-Cascades. In the fall of 2019, the Bend campus plans to launch a part-time, fully online program aimed at licensed Registered Nurses seeking to advance their careers while continuing to work. What do wild animals do in wildfires? (National Geographic)

Wild areas like forests and prairies naturally grow and change in composition over time. A year-old forest will have a different set of plants and animals living in it than a forest that's 40 years old. A disturbance like a wildfire can serve as a sort of reset button, letting an old forest be born again, says Patricia Kennedy, a wildlife biologist at Oregon State University in Union. And "a lot of species require that reset."

EPA building renovation: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s research laboratory facility in Corvallis is undergoing a renovation. The office at S.W. 35th Street was built in 1965 and needs modernization. Staff at the Goodnight Avenue location will be moved into the updated building. Work is expected to continue over the next few years. Despite the fencing, the office remains open to the public. The lobby has been relocated to the rear wing of the main building. Follow signs from the visitor parking lot to access the lobby. EPA’s office in Newport will remain operational and open to the public throughout the renovations in Corvallis.

OSMSC Undergraduate/Graduate Proteomics Summer Research Opportunity: The Oregon State University Mass Spectrometry Center (OSMSC) is offering proteomics research opportunities during summer of 2018 for undergraduate/graduate research projects. Accepted students will conduct their proposed research during the summer term with the technical support provided by OSMSC. The OSMSC will waive the training fee for all accepted students and will provide an allowance of total eight hours of free mass spectrometer instrument time and data analysis time to each student for the conduct of their summer research. Proposals outlining the project along with the application form and a letter of support backing the student from the PI of the lab should be submitted by Aug. 15.
