Draft rules to govern police conduct in Oregon leave lots of wiggle room (OPB News)

The commission opted not to consider what penalties, if any, an officer should face if they join a hate group, prompting pushback from the only two Black members. “It’s really disappointing to see all the law enforcement and how this doesn’t seem to be an important issue to you,” said Tarron Anderson, a civil rights investigator at Oregon State University who said he felt compelled to speak up over this issue. “I try to be objective and understand from both sides of the aisle but some of these things are really troubling.”
 

Meat prices in Oregon could go down with new state law (KGW)

According to Oregon State University, there are only 13 federally approved slaughterhouses operating within the state right now that process cattle. All meat butchered in Oregon must be inspected before it can legally be sold in stores or served in restaurants, and wait times for inspection are long.

In Road Trip to Nowhere: Hollywood Encounters the Counterculture (2022), Lewis explores the seedy underbelly of Hollywood’s peace and love years. 
 

US regulators to certify first small modular nuclear reactor design (Extreme Tech)

NuScale, which has been anticipating approval of this design since the last technology review in 2020, says its small modular reactor (SMR) addresses these concerns. It’s based on a “Multi-Application Small Light Water Reactor” developed at Oregon State University in the early 2000s. 
 

Reser Stadium renovations progressing on schedule (Sports Business Journal)

Oregon State AD Scott Barnes said that Reser Stadium renovations are "still on budget and on time,” according to Nick Ursini of Eugene-based KEZI-ABC. There are "cranes moving steel," and columns are "up on the west side of the stadium." OSU will "still play their home games at Reser Stadium," but with "no seating on the west side, there will be roughly 26,000 seats available."

Portions of Parker Plaza and areas inside the east Reser Stadium concourse will be blocked off for part of the exercise. However, road and sidewalk access around the stadium will still be available. To keep the exercise area safe, please do not interfere with or approach the activity inside or outside Reser Stadium.

SpiderHarp: The SpiderHarp — a musical instrument developed by Prof. Ross Hatton's research group at OSU, based on research about how spiders interpret vibrations in their webs — will be live in concert at Emerson Vineyards on Sunday, Aug. 14 from 3-6 p.m. Prof. Chet Udell will perform original pieces he has prepared for the SpiderHarp, and Hatton will discuss the engineering and biology that makes the SpiderHarp work. NEW! New Realities in Home Ownership: Due to the upheaval in the housing market over the past few years many new realities of home ownership have appeared. These realities include changes in the types of home loans that are now available, as well as more properties that are now bank-owned or underwater which has changed how some interested buyers now view these types of properties. Potential buyers also need to recognize the importance of having their finances in order prior to applying for a home loan and understand how potential lenders now perceive what is considered good credit. Core Curriculum for OSU Managers and Supervisors: The Core Curriculum for Managers and Supervisors is a training program for all OSU managers, supervisors and lead workers. At the end of this course, learners will have a solid understanding about the principles and policies that apply to our employees; know how to navigate within the space of talent management activities; recognize when, and how, to provide equal opportunity and access to employees; and be familiar with OSU resources and responsibilities relating to employee health, safety and wellbeing. Participants wanted: The Human-Machine Teaming Lab in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is conducting a research experiment to study human-robot decision making in simulated scenarios. Participants will be asked to operate a robot interface using a computer and to complete questionnaires. You are expected to join a one-day experiment for up to 1.5 hours. Cordley Hall sidewalk: As part of the Cordley Hall Renewal Project, the north/south sidewalk on the east side of Cordley Hall between Cordley Hall, Bates Hall and the Hallie E. Ford Center will be closed due to construction Aug. 5 through June 2024. The closure is between SW Campus Way and SW Orchard Ave (view map).
