"It's hard to describe some of this life in terms that we can even understand because they appear to be able to survive for such long periods of time with virtually no energy available," says Rick Colwell, an oceanographer and astrobiologist at Oregon State University. "In some cases, we've started to refer to them as zombies — nearly dead. It appears, however, they can be revived, in some cases."

Sustainable Landscape Seminar: The two-day Sustainable Landscape Seminar provides the public with practical information to create sustainable/green/ecological landscapes. Some outcomes to expect include lowering power, water and waste bills due to more efficient use of resources, and reducing the flow of organic matter into the landfill. The Ethnobotany of the Kalapuya: Learn about the ethnobotany of our landcestors from Doug Duer and David Harrelson in the final talk of this year's Champinefu Lecture Series, which will be held at the Majestic Theatre on Wednesday, Dec. 12. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the lecture will begin at 7 p.m. This lecture, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Spring Creek Project. Learn more.

NEW! University budget conversation: On Thursday, Dec. 13, at noon, the Office of Budget & Fiscal Planning will hold another University Budget Conversation in Memorial Union 215. We will start the conversation with a summary of the governor’s budget. A budget brief (handout) will be available. Rent burden panel discussion: The city of Corvallis will host a public meeting on housing affordability and rent burdens. Corvallis has the highest percentage of rent-burdened households in Oregon. The meeting will feature a panel discussion with representatives from local agencies. The event will take place on Dec. 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library’s Main Meeting Room.
BeaverHacks, Winter 2018: The Hackathon Club at OSU is holding a hackathon Dec. 13-16, 5 p.m., online. Awards will be given for C++ Console App, People's Choice, Alumni, and 1st/2nd/3rd place. Students new to programming are encouraged to join. Those looking for teammates can indicate that on the registration form and will be matched with a group. Momentum: Since the dawn of the 21st century, the pace of technological innovation has been astonishing. Along with the advances that are improving and simplifying our lives come new perils. Throughout the College of Engineering, researchers are working on novel solutions to help address some of the greatest threats of our time. In this issue of Momentum, the college highlights a few of these projects and the researchers who are striving to keep us safe and secure.
Winter 2019 FERPA Learning Community: The Office of the Registrar will offer another FERPA Learning Community (LC) Winter term. Join the LC and explore the nuances and applications of FERPA with colleagues from across campus. If you’re interested, take a minute to fill out this interest survey, which lists the dates/times of the meetings.
Winter Break Recycling Collection Schedules: Dec. 17 through Jan. 4, most buildings will have recycling collection reduced to every other week due to reduced available staffing and activity within most buildings during that time. Contact Campus Recycling through this form to inform us of any exceptions that need to be addressed such as full building or office closures; include a contact name, email, phone and the office or building location.
