Jamon Van Den Hoek, a professor at Oregon State University and one of the 36 scientists currently adjudicating the NASA pilot project, told me that Earth imagery now functions as a crucial data source for scientists. The pixels are the data, he told me: “These aren’t just for reference. These aren’t just for a base map. These are the data you analyze.”

OSU-Cascades student named Bend Chamber Woman of Year: Young Hero: 
When a family emergency meant staying home in Redmond, Ore., Mountain View High School student Lynnea Fredrickson applied to OSU-Cascades. Now an OSU-Cascades senior, Fredrickson was just named the Bend Chamber’s Woman of the Year - Young Hero (18-21). The speech communications major’s resume includes undergraduate research, lobbying the Oregon State Legislature for funding for the Bend campus, student government service and two part-time jobs.

Prospective student open house: Spring preview, an open house program for prospective students, will be in CH2M and the Memorial Union on Friday, April 12. The fifth annual Pacific Northwest Undergraduate Religious Studies Conference showcases the work of student researchers from Oregon State University, the University of Puget Sound, Linfield College, Willamette University, and Lewis and Clark College. Presentations range widely from Islamic architecture, Tibetan Buddhism, and resurrection in Orthodox Christianity to the religious symbolism of Star Wars, the ethical shortcomings of the war on drugs, and the religious roots of the American penal system. Events

Mariachi music: The OSU Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Chapter will be hosting a Mariachi Band from Woodburn High School during Ag Day (Tuesday, April 16), with music at 11 a.m. on the quad in front of the MU. There will be a Krispy Kreme fundraiser selling a dozen original glazed donuts for $12 or one donut for $1. If you are interesting in securing your dozen, fill out the Krispy Kreme Order Form. Pick up will be at the OSU MANRRS booth in the SEC PLAZA April 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Accepted are cash, check (payable to OSU MANRRS), or venmo @osu_manrrs. All orders must be submitted by April 13 at 5 p.m. 

Trek Theatre: Trek Theatre of Eugene presents its only Corvallis performance of the classic Star Trek episode: "Space Seed." The crew of the Enterprise encounters a sleeper ship that contains one of the most dangerous and renowned villains of the Star Trek universe - the genetically enhanced, super-tyrant Khan Noonian Singh.  With this performance, Trek Theatre continues to perform science fiction community theater that raises important questions about the role of science and technology in contemporary culture and society. Admission is free and open to the public. Monday, April 15, from 7-8 p.m., MU Ballroom.

Artwork of Shelley Jordon: The artwork of Oregon State University professor of art Shelley Jordon is on display in the Fairbanks Gallery of Art through April 25. Jordon, who teaches painting and drawing in the School of Arts and Communication in the College of Liberal Arts, is a painter and moving-image artist who explores interior and exterior worlds and connections between past and present experiences. Using traditional drawing and painting media applied to two-dimensional artwork, animation and installation, Jordon expresses the complex nature of memory; physical and emotional, collective and personal. Her recent paintings and animations meditate on the passage of time, the power and beauty of nature and the cycle of life. Fairbanks Gallery is in Fairbanks Hall, 220 SW 26th St., on the OSU main campus. It is open 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

NEW! Duo Sign Up Events: The Duo team will have walk-up events for employees to sign up for Duo, get questions answered, and obtain a token if needed. This is a drop-in event, no registration needed. Signup takes less than five minutes. STEAM Speaker: The annual da Vinci Days STEAM Speaker Series will offer the public opportunities to explore the art and science of waves, from the depths of the ocean to the haunting tones of a one-of-a-kind musical instrument and the intersections of art and water. Following the theme of “Making Waves,” the free, family-friendly presentations will be held every Tuesday in April at the Hilton Garden Inn, 2500 SW Western Ave. in Corvallis. April 16, “Marine Energy: What, Where, Why, How and OSU” will be given by Bryson Robertson, director of the Pacific Marine Energy Center and an assistant professor in the OSU College of Engineering.The talks begin at 6 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Monks, Mystical Diaries, and Queer Kinship: Join us at the Center for the Humanities for a talk by Tekla Bude, assistant professor in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film. Bude’s research focuses on ways medieval writers were influenced by and influenced the study of music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy. Her new book project investigates forms of "silent" or "metaphysical" music from 1300 to 1550. In this talk, she’ll discuss how the diaries of two 15th-century Carthusian monks manifest musical expressions of their affection and desire for one another. Invitations to Attend Accreditation Open Forums: Classified staff, faculty (academic and professional) and students are invited to attend their respective open forums on Monday, April 15, or Tuesday, April 16, during the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) visit to OSU next week. For details visit the University Accreditation Website. OSU has published its Year Seven Self-Evaluation Report as well as an Executive Summary  in preparation for the site visit.

IMPACT STUDIO SESSIONS: Join Rich Duncombe, Impact Studio director, on April 18 from noon to. 1 p.m., in MU 215 Thought Lab for a conversation about the 2019 Impact Studio initiatives. Duncombe will open with a summary of the three new initiatives being pursued in 2019 and an overview of the Impact Studio development process. This will be the first studio session of a series being offered every three months to discuss the active initiatives in our portfolio and broader topics relating to how to lead adjacent innovation inside of Oregon State and other successful institutions.

Opening Space for the Radical Imagination: This conference invites participants to create a common space for radical imagination and social justice that goes beyond a skill-share for radical organizers. Radical Imagination invites us to engage in a profound critique of what seems obvious (radical = that goes to the roots of something) and to explore alternative ways of living together - producing, loving, shaping spaces and time, inhabiting the land, working, using, struggling. Traffic & Maintenance 

Scheduled: Campus Wide Steam Shutdown: Each year Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus, to complete maintenance services at the plant, throughout the steam tunnels and in each building. This process affects hot water supply, heating, and all equipment that uses steam, campus wide. The steam shutdown for 2019 will occur from 6 p.m. on June 16 to 5 p.m. on June 20.
