Coronavirus wastewater surveillance expands to communities across Oregon (OPB News)

A wastewater surveillance program designed to help communities detect and potentially track the coronavirus will be significantly expanding its footprint in Oregon. The state is providing $1.2 million to researchers at Oregon State University to start analyzing samples from more than 40 wastewater treatment plants across the state. (see also KTVZ)

Oregon State University has made several changes to address the COVID-19 pandemic, including the expansion of its isolation spaces.
 

How innovators are addressing large-animal vet shortage (Capital Press)

Small to mid-sized farms also face an acute veterinarian shortage. So do farmers in more urban areas, according to Dale Moore, director of Washington State University's Veterinary Extension. "But large corporate ranches and dairies usually don't have a problem attracting vets," said Susan Tornquist, dean of Oregon State University's College of Veterinary Medicine.
 

OSU study shows evidence of COVID-19 in sewer system (KEZI)

New data from Oregon State University's trace study shows there is evidence of COVID-19  in the Corvallis sewer system. Tyler Radniecki, OSU associate professor of environmental engineering, said genetic evidence in Corvallis wastewater of the virus that causes COVID-19 has been consistently detected at moderate levels for the past month following a late July spike. 
 

Study: Vitamins C, D may help immune system fight COVID-19 (Pharmacy Times)

Researchers from Oregon State University (OSU) are urging the use of a daily multivitamin, but also vitamin C and vitamin D supplements much higher than federally recommended guidelines. The study authors recommended 200 milligrams or more of vitamin C and 2000 international units of vitamin D.


Oregon State study tracks patient opioid use in nursing facilities (Legal Reader) 

A new Oregon State University College of Pharmacy study published in Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety found 70 percent of patients discharged from a hospital to skilled nursing facilities were prescribed an opioid.  Of those prescribed opioids, 68 percent were prescribed oxycodone, and more than half of the prescriptions had a daily morphine milligram equivalent of 90 or higher.

Seafood production could see as much as a 75 percent leap over the next three decades if certain policy reforms and technological improvements are put in place, according to research conducted by Oregon State University (OSU) in collaboration with a bevy of international scientists.
 

Corvallis most educated town in Oregon, research shows (Democrat-Herald)

The researchers examined statistics from a database of more than 2.5 million car insurance applications to find the most educated cities. Interested customers input personal and vehicle information, including their city of residence and highest level of education. Using a proprietary scoring algorithm, analysts calculated an education score for each customer based on educational history and achievement.

Meanwhile, de Jong will partner with robotics professor Joe Davidson from Oregon State University and biological engineering professor Manoj Karkee from WSU in a project funded by the Washington research commission to use a sensor system to measure tree nitrogen status to inform precision nutrient application.

Demolition of Naval ROTC Armory: As part of the Washington Way Improvement Project, work related to the demolition of the Quonset Hut that served as the previous home of the Naval ROTC Armory is scheduled to start on Wednesday, Aug. 26 and continue through Thursday, Sept. 17. Abatement is already completed (view map).

Sidewalk closure: As part of the Buxton Hall Roof Replacement Project, the sidewalk on the south side of SW Jefferson Way from SW Weatherford Place to SW Sackett Place will be closed to support dumpster placement (view map). The closure is scheduled to start on Friday, Aug. 14 and continue through Friday, Sept. 4.
