Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media. OSU hemp guru on why Oregon rules (Portland Business Journal)

Noller brings a deep perspective to hemp, befitting the head of Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center, which was unveiled this past summer. Noller took the post after nearly five years as head of the university’s Crop and Soil Science Department, during which time he was also the College of Agriculture’s lead hemp researcher on a part-time basis.
 

The next nuclear plants will be small, svelte and safer (Wired)

For the last 20 years, the future of nuclear power has stood in a high bay laboratory tucked away on the Oregon State University campus in the western part of the state. Operated by NuScale Power, an Oregon-based energy startup, this prototype reactor represents a new chapter in the conflict-ridden, politically bedeviled saga of nuclear power plants.

Today, the OSU Board of Trustees will hold a special board meeting to consider the appointment and employment agreement of the university's next president. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, in the MU Horizon Room. The candidate under consideration for appointment will be introduced publicly at the meeting. Board meeting, reception announcing OSU’s next president: Oregon State University’s Board of Trustees will hold a special board meeting to consider the appointment and employment agreement of Oregon State University’s next president. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, in the Memorial Union Horizon Room on the OSU Corvallis campus. $5K Innovation Days Award & Innovation Days event: OSU faculty are invited to join the OSU Advantage office for an Innovation Days event on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 3 p.m. in the MU to learn about the resources OSU has to help research and technology achieve greater societal impact via tech commercialization. Hear from an OSU faculty member and a student as they share their journey. Faculty participation in Innovation Days enables eligibility for a $5,000 innovation award. MLK Celebration: Free tickets for the 38th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. peace breakfast are now available to OSU faculty, staff and students. The breakfast begins at 9 a.m. in the CH2M HILL Alumni Center ballroom on Monday, Jan. 20, and seating is limited. After the breakfast, Raquel Willis, a black queer transgender activist, writer and the executive editor of Out Magazine, will be the keynote speaker for the celebration lecture at 11 a.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center. The keynote session is free and open to the public, and tickets are not required. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration week runs Jan. 18 through 24. NEW! Winter 2020 FERPA Learning Community: Are you interested in taking a deeper dive into your FERPA knowledge? The Office of the Registrar has offered the FERPA Learning Community in terms past and plans to offer it again this winter if there are enough interested participants. If you're interested, fill out this interest survey, which lists more information about the time commitment involved, by Jan. 2. Every participant will develop a presentation and FAQ sheet relevant to their organization.

Remote Data Collection/ Field work Training: The Adventure Leadership Institute is offering an 80-hour certification course, Wilderness First Responder, which prepares individuals to manage injuries, improvise and provide long-term patient care in remote settings such as field courses or research sites. Oregon Forest Health Conference: The State of the State 2020 conference brings together researchers and managers to present the current science on forest health in Oregon. Conference Dates: Feb. 26-27 at the LaSells Stewart Center. Early registration ($150) is open through Feb. 18; regular registration ($200) begins on Feb. 19. Student registration available. Core curriculum: The Core Curriculum for Current Supervisors and Managers training program, presented by the Office of Human Resources, is open for registration. Core Curriculum is a blended online/2-day classroom training program that strengthens knowledge and skills required for effective supervision and management at OSU. Conference on affordability in online learning: OSU is hosting a regional conference with a focus on improving student success and affordability in online and digital learning. Co-hosted by the Online Learning Consortium and OSU Ecampus, the event – scheduled for Feb. 7 in the Memorial Union – will bring faculty, administrators and online learning professionals together to address the opportunities and challenges facing the future of affordability in higher education. Learn more and register today.

Curriculum maps: These planning tools provide clarity to the program assessment process. By diagramming existing and potential courses, curriculum maps identify program strengths, requirements and student learning objectives. Take Note

Toys for Tots: Thank you from everyone in the Naval ROTC department for donating to the Toys for Tots toy drive. The boxes are overflowing with almost 200 toys collected. They will be wrapped and distributed to bring a smile to a less fortunate child on Christmas morning.

Phishing emails: Did you know? In November, 1,333 phishing emails were submitted to the Office of Information Security by the OSU community. If you’d like to help identify and take action on phishing emails, forward any phishing email you receive as an attachment to [email protected]

Momentum: Research advances from the faculty, staff and students at the College of Engineering are a remarkable driver of the local, state, national and global economy. The college is making the most of the significant investment from donors, industry partners and agencies at all levels of government, turning research funding into the tools, products and services that are fueling our future. In the winter 2020 issue of Momentum, we highlight a few of the many Oregon State Engineering projects that are making a positive impact on the economy of Oregon and beyond.

Affordable learning grant application: OSU’s Open Educational Resources Unit announces that funding for faculty to adopt, adapt or author an open textbook will be made available in early January. This grant supports faculty who make learning more affordable for their students by implementing no-cost, high-quality OER for their courses. Registration for STEM Academy’s AWSEM (Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering, and Math) Clubs for students in grades 6-12 is open: AWSEM Clubs are designed to nurture girls’ interest in STEM by providing a program of hands-on activities paired with positive adult women STEM role models. Middle school club meets on Tuesdays, 5-6:30 p.m, from Jan. 21 through Feb. 25. High school club meets on Wednesdays, 5-6:30 p.m., Jan. 22-Feb. 26. Undergraduate women studying science and engineering at OSU will lead and be mentors for the clubs. To register: http://stemacademy.oregonstate.edu. While AWSEM Clubs are designed to nurture girl’s interest in STEM, anyone is eligible to apply.

Not sure what the next step is in your business venture? The OSU Advantage Accelerator is accepting applications for its winter Accelerate cohort which begins Tuesday, Jan. 7. Accelerate is open to OSU and community teams who want to launch a business or have a technology with commercialization potential. Upon completion, teams will have an elevator pitch, a five-minute pitch deck completed, product market validation, feedback from many mentors, and more. For some teams, completion of Accelerate qualifies the team for internal funding opportunities. Zero-Waste Events Survey: Last fall, representatives from Campus Recycling, OSU Catering, OSU Events, OSUPC, the MU, and SLI formed a work group to address zero-waste events. To best connect event planners and venues with the resources they need to reduce event waste, the work group wants to hear from these individuals. Share your challenges and ideas here

Difference, Power, and Discrimination Academy Applications: Faculty applications are being accepted for the DPD Academy scheduled to be held from June 15 to June 26, 2020. The DPD Academy facilitates focused and productive engagement with contemporary, multidisciplinary scholarship on difference, power and discrimination; critical pedagogies; and curriculum transformation. Applications for PCOSW scholarships and event co-sponsorships for spring term projects are now being accepted: The President’s Commission on the Status of Women provides funding to faculty, students, and staff who are pursuing professional development, research, outreach, or creative projects related to women’s issues. Scholarships average $300 and are paid by reimbursement.
