Inside the race to find Earth's oldest ice (Scientific American)

“The ice that is deposited at the surface of Antarctica is being buried and gradually flowing out toward the [continent’s] edges—and then eventually is lost, melting into the ocean or as icebergs calving into the ocean. Because of that process, the oldest ice is always rare,” says Ed Brook, a paleoclimatologist at Oregon State University and director of COLDEX.

Start-up hopes 'super' poplar trees will suck up more CO2 (Scientific American)

One of the field trials will be conducted in a forest at Oregon State University, where Strauss is a distinguished professor of forest biotechnology. Other locations are throughout the United States, including the site of an abandoned mine in Pennsylvania with degraded soils.

For female scientists, Antarctica can be a sexual harassment hellscape (Mother Jones)

These students and about a hundred other researchers from roughly a dozen institutions had gathered at Oregon State University to kick off COLDEX, a 5-year, $25-million-dollar paleoclimatology project tasked by the NSF, the federal science agency, to find and drill a core of Earth’s oldest ice in Antarctica. The report Kerr mentioned was the 273-page elephant in the room—a document the NSF released in late August detailing a decades-long history of pervasive sexual harassment and assault at Antarctic research stations.
