Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media. Content appearing includes timely news and feature stories from broadcast, print and online sources. Occasionally, opinion pieces and first-person columns appearing in mainstream media outlets that are written by faculty members and pertain to their academic or professional expertise may be included based on their unique, informative value, timeliness and space constraints. Bringing back Oregon's sea otters gets federal bucks for feasibility study (OPB News)

A newly published study by a master’s student in the Marine Mammal Institute of Oregon State University found there is suitable habitat along the Oregon Coast to support around 4,500 resident sea otters, setting aside for a moment the potential disturbance from human activities.
 

Oregon lawmakers advance bill to establish tsunami zone building standards (KLCC)

“When you build a building in a tsunami zone to a particular standard, that standard allows for the survival of the steel frame of the building,” said Oregon State University geologist Chris Goldfinger. “It says nothing about whether the building’s going to be functional after the wave hits it, or whether anybody in the building is going to survive.”

After featuring her story in the spring, the relationship continued throughout the year, including conceiving and creating this series, together with a group of other members of the Central Oregon community.
 

CAFE 541: As craft beer diversifies, women are reclaiming the image of homebrewer (Register-Guard)

A quarter of the students studying beer, cider, wine and spirits in Oregon State University’s Fermentation Science program are women. That’s compared with 70% in its Enology and Viticulture (wine-specific) program, said Tom Shellhammer, a fermentation science professor there. The number of women interested in beer and fermentation has been rising slowly over 10 years, said Shellhammer anecdotally.

It served as the heart of the College's 180-acre farm until 1909, when construction of a new barn was completed. EcoFilm: The Beaver Believers: The hour-long film follows Beaver Believers onto spectacular western landscapes, where beaver have already begun to transform damaged watersheds.  FY19 Sustainability Report: The Sustainability Office invites you to explore OSU’s FY19 Sustainability Report. Reports are partly built from the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS), a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure sustainability performance. FY19 produced OSU’s highest STARS score ever, as we continue an upwards trend towards becoming a greener and more inclusive university.

OSU Folk Club/Thrift Shop Scholarships: The OSU Folk Club/Thrift Shop Scholarship Committee is accepting applications from high school seniors who will attend OSU in the fall of 2020 and are graduating from a Benton County High School or live in Benton County. The Scholarship Committee is also accepting applications from non-traditional women (age 30 or older, who will be attending OSU full-time or part-time in 2020-2021 pursuing their first undergraduate degree.
