New program aims to create next generation of nuclear forensic scientists (Think Out Loud)


Oregon State University is one of the several schools that are a part of the consortium and will receive $2.5 million over the next five years. Camille Palmer is an associate professor in OSU’s school of Nuclear Science and Engineering. She will also serve as the deputy director and help lead the program.
 

Far-off storms could be one cause of sneaker waves on Pacific Northwest beaches (OPB News)

Tuba Özkan-Haller, an Oregon State University professor who studies the physics of ocean waves, said the waves are often described as “mini-tsunamis.” “They tend to surprise those who are near the water,” she said. “The beach that looked dry will now be inundated, sometimes to hip height.”

 

Oregon cloud video misrepresented as Ohio derailment aftermath (Associated Press)

Larry O’Neill, associate professor and director of Oregon Climate Services at Oregon State University, said the cloud could have been associated with a thunderstorm, or could be a deck of altostratus clouds, a type of middle-altitude cloud that often takes up the whole sky. “In Oregon, we get altostratus cloud bands just like this fairly regularly,” he said. “Near sunrise or sunset, they can look dramatic from the lighting even though they are completely innocuous clouds.”

NEW! Book talk by Chris Blattman: Chris Blattman is the Ramalee E. Pearson Professor of Global Conflict Studies at the University of Chicago’s Pearson Institute and Harris School of Public Policy. He is an economist and political scientist who studies violence, crime and underdevelopment. The Oregon Trail: University Theatre and the Memorial Union present The Oregon Trail, by Bekah Brunstetter. It’s 1997 and a middle-schooler finds herself trapped in the computer lab, playing “The Oregon Trail” game. The game comes to life and juxtaposes the students’ modern struggles with those of her great-great grandmother, who traveled the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon in 1848. 7:30 p.m., Feb. 23-24 and March 2-3, and 2 p.m., March 5, in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Reading and talk with author Christopher Preston:  Author Christopher Preston will discuss his new book, “Tenacious Beasts: Wildlife Recoveries That Change How We Think about Animals,” at 5:30 p.m. March 23 in the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library’s main meeting room. He will offer a look at how some wildlife species are defying the odds and teaching important lessons about how to share a planet. The Bird Walk is back: We’re live and on campus, bringing back the Bird Walk in all its glory. School of Public Policy basket raffle: Buy some tickets to have a chance to win a variety of baskets put together by the School of Public Policy departments. Traffic and Maintenance

Pride Center parking closed: As part of the Pride Center Renovation project, the sidewalk on the north side of SW A Avenue will be closed between 15th and 16th streets Feb. 15-17. Three city parking spaces in front of the Pride Center will also be closed. The crosswalk and south sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians. Other possible impacts include dust, mud and noise near the construction site.
