The results of fire suppression are recorded in the rings, according to new research by Oregon State University. And, they indicate that snuffing out wildfires in Oregon has made forests more dense and less tolerant of drought, pests and fire.

Piano Series performance: American pianist Jeremy Denk will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, in The LaSells Stewart Center as part of the Corvallis-OSU Piano International Steinway Piano Series. Denk was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2013. He has performed as a soloist across North America with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Seattle Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra. Tickets are $25 in advance or $28 at the door. Advance tickets are available online at corvallispiano.org or at Grass Roots Books & Music in Corvallis.

NEW! Trayvon Martin documentary: Jan. 17-24, join us for one episode or all viewings of “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,” a documentary series with moderated discussions. Helmed by executive producer Shawn Carter (aka Jay-Z), this six-part, unscripted documentary series examining the life and legacy of Trayvon Martin and controversial events of the last decade, including the worldwide Black Lives Matter movement that grew after Trayvon's death. OSU Portland Center grand opening: Celebrate the opening of Oregon State's new space right off of Pioneer Square in downtown Portland on Jan. 14, 1-6:30 p.m. Explore the facility during this open house. Visit with representatives from OSU colleges and divisions to learn about their programs. The OSU Portland Center is located on the second floor of the historic Meier & Frank Building, adjacent to Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. Besides serving as an educational space for a number of Oregon State’s signature programs, the center houses the Portland-based staff of the OSU Foundation and OSU Alumni Association, acting as a hub for the university’s many activities in the region.

2019 MLK Day of Service: Registration for the 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 19 is now open. Students, faculty, staff, and their partners and children are all invited to participate in OSU’s largest day of service of the year. Projects will take place at various times throughout the day. A light breakfast, snacks, and hot lunch will be provided. Check-in will be located in the MU Horizon Room 49, and transportation to all projects will be provided. NEW! OSU in Cuba information session: Join OSU faculty Ron Mize and Melanie Nichol (School of Language, Culture & Society) for this opportunity to learn about and experience Cuba in 2019. A 10-credit academic program includes a four-credit spring term course followed by a six-credit summer field study for two weeks in and around Havana and the Bay of Pigs. Session to be held Tuesday, Jan. 15, 6 p.m. in Waldo Hall 240.

Intro to CORE for New Users:The Cooperative Open Reporting Environment is OSU's central tool for accessing official university reports and institutional data. All OSU employees have access to CORE reports and dashboards based on their employment classification and Job Profile. NEW! OSU cats needed for study: Researchers at the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine are conducting a pilot study examining the role of the feline nasal microbiome in upper respiratory infection. They are seeking cats with and without chronic URI that live in the same household. If you own two cats, one with chronic upper respiratory problems and one without, please email Brianna Beechler at [email protected]. All participating cats will receive a free physical exam and blood panel between Jan. 21 and Feb. 8.

Library Undergraduate Research Awards: Has one of your students done an outstanding research paper or project that used library resources? Then they could receive a $1,000 scholarship from OSU Libraries for submitting their project or paper along with other submission materials by Jan. 31. Taste Testers Wanted: A fun and tasty way to participate in food research. The OSU Center for Sensory & Consumer Behavior Research is looking for panelists for consumer taste tests.  Open to all students, faculty, staff and family members. Must be at least 18 years of age. Panelists receive up to $20/hour for their time.  Tests run throughout the year but panelists choose which tests interest them. Applications for PCOSW scholarships and event co-sponsorships for Spring term projects are now being accepted: The President’s Commission on the Status of Women provides funding to OSU community members who are pursuing professional development, research, outreach, or creative projects related to women’s issues. Scholarships average $300 and are paid by reimbursement. Oregon Sea Grant 2020-2022 Biennial Research CompetitionOregon Sea Grant invites researchers affiliated with any Oregon institution of higher education to submit pre-proposals for two-year research projects. These projects should address cutting-edge, socioeconomic and biophysical science related to important marine and coastal issues. Accreditation: Oregon State University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. As part of the ongoing accreditation process, OSU is scheduled to submit a "Year Seven Self-Evaluation Report" to the NWCCU and host a site visit of peer evaluators from April 15-17, 2019. Accreditation by the NWCCU represents the commission’s judgment that an institution is satisfactorily achieving its mission and educational purposes and that it meets or exceed the commission’s standards of quality and effectiveness. OSU has been continuously accredited by the NWCCU since 1924, having been most recently reaffirmed Spring 2011.
