An international collaboration that includes two Oregon State University scientists says the world’s largest marine protected areas aren’t collectively delivering the biodiversity benefits they could be because of slow implementation of management strategies and a failure to restrict the most impactful human activities.
Among those scientists who have gone to Washington is Kiri Wagstaff, a computer scientist who temporarily left her teaching position at Oregon State University in Corvallis to work for a year in the office of Senator Mark Kelly, an Arizona Democrat and former astronaut. Wagstaff is one of six AI researchers now serving in Congress through the Science & Technology Policy Fellowships programme run by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Holocaust Memorial Week: OSU has observed Holocaust Memorial Week every year since 1987. The breadth and the duration of OSU’s effort are unmatched in the Pacific Northwest. This program grows from the belief that educational institutions can do much to combat prejudice of all kinds, and to foster respect for the diversity that is America, by promoting an awareness of the Holocaust, perhaps the most horrific historical indicator of the high cost of prejudice. Sunday in the Park with George: Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical depicts two years in the life of 19th century pointillist painter, Georges Seurat, as he develops his most famous work, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." A hundred years later, a young experimental artist named George with his own special relationship to the Seurat painting, grapples with success and his devotion to his beloved grandmother. OSU Land Use Code amendment meetings: OSU Land Use Planning will host two community meetings to discuss proposed amendments to the Corvallis Land Development Code and Comprehensive Plan that impact the Corvallis campus. Land Use Planning staff will also give updates on projects planned or currently underway and city staff members will be available to answer questions as well. OSU Wind Ensemble: The Student Arts Season at PRAx kicks off with the Oregon State University Wind Ensemble 7 p.m. May 14 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. The OSU Wind Ensemble features the most outstanding brass, woodwind and percussion players on campus. This 50-member ensemble explores new literature and performs the masterworks of the wind band ensemble genre. The windensemble is directed by Erik Leung, director of bands at OSU. Phish Studies Conference: OSU and the Mockingbird Foundation are honored to host the second Phish Studies Conference featuring research presentations and community events about the improvisational rock band Phish, as well as its fans and culture. The conference will showcase a number of special events including community panels, an exhibition fair, a poster session, a Phishsonian pop-up museum exhibit, a pre-conference workshop for Phans for Racial Equity and GrooveSafe, and curated art exhibits. OSU One-Acts: The Spring One-Act Festival 2024 features six newly adapted plays inspired by folk tales written and directed by OSU students. Human-Robot Interaction Research Study: Oregon State University Mechanical Engineering is conducting a research study to better understand how people interact with robot arms in mock collaboration tasks. The study lasts for about one hour. The full study title is “Evaluating Expressive Behaviors for an Interactive Robot Arm,” and the principal investigator is Prof. Naomi Fitter. Duo Passcodes – Upcoming Retirement: Passcodes for Duo authentication will retire on May 8. Passcodes are six-digit codes that are usually generated by a hardware token and can also be obtained through the Duo Mobile app. If you use Verified Duo Push, this change will not affect you. Automated Driving System research: The School of Civil and Construction Engineering and the School of Psychological Science are seeking paid volunteers for research studies. The purpose of this research study is to make Automated Driving System (ADS) vehicles safer for pedestrians with disabilities. To participate in one of the studies, you must identify as having a visual, hearing and/or mobility disability, and be at least 18 years old. Volunteers must commit 60 minutes to the research and will either wear a VR headset or a light-weight wearable device. Employee Community Climate Survey: The 2024 OSU Employee Community Climate Survey launched on May 3 with an email invitation to employees from the Office of Institutional Diversity (OID). 2025 Faculty Fellowship Program Consortium-Directed Funding: The NW CASC is now accepting proposals for our 2025 Faculty Fellowship Program. This last-mile program aims to support efforts to make existing research more usable for natural and cultural resource managers facing climate-related risks and challenges. To achieve this aim, the program supports research involving faculty at NW CASC Consortium institutions and provides skills-building opportunities around the co-production of decision-relevant (i.e., "actionable”) science.
