Oregon's ballot fiasco spotlights clerk's troubled 20-year run (Washington Post)

Some county clerks are appointed, but in many counties in Oregon and elsewhere they are beholden to the whims of voters who may not be paying attention, said Christopher McKnight Nichols, an associate professor of history at Oregon State University. There’s a “myopia and invisibility about this sort of office in American public life,” he said.
 

NIFA-funded research strengthens tools for wildfire management, adaptation and recovery (National Institute of Food and Agriculture)

At Oregon State University, Kevin Bladon is leading a $734,000 project to study the west side of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains — which were recently burned by large, high-severity wildfires — to assess the effectiveness of various post-fire land management strategies. The project, funded this year through NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, will yield key insights into how land managers can best reduce soil erosion, improve its nutrient availability, and encourage vegetation to successfully regrow.

But we need to use it to educate,” said Joy Waite-Cusic, professor at Oregon State University’s Department of Food Science and Technology. Waite-Cusic has studied food safety extensively and reviewed the cannabis commission’s investigatory report at the request of The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Art About Agriculture’s annual exhibition of agriculture and natural resource-themed artwork by Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences has started a statewide tour in Corvallis and will continue to Baker City and Newport in the coming months.

Water Resource Policy & Management M.S. Defense: Josiah J. Water Resource Engineering Ph.D. Defense: Kyle Proctor will present “Harvesting Sunshine: A Modular Integrated Framework for Modeling the Agrivoltaic System,” on May 27 at 9 a.m. in STAG 262 or on Zoom. Proctor is advised under the guidance of major professor Ganti Murthy of Biological & Ecological Engineering. 

Board of Trustees meeting: The OSU Board of Trustees will meet May 27 to consider approving the university’s fiscal year 2022-23 operating budget and two construction projects on the Corvallis campus. The meeting is scheduled from 9:15 a.m.-2 p.m. to be held in the Horizon Room of the Memorial Union on the Corvallis campus. Music à la Carte: Seeking Light, University Chorale. University Chorale performs their final concert of school year, with music reflecting themes of safety and refuge, peace, hope, awakening. Students studying choral conducting will share the podium. University Chorale is a lab choir, directed by Sandra Babb. This concert represents the culmination of the students' learning throughout the term. May 27 at noon in the Memorial Union Lounge. Free, open to all. Spring Sing! The OSU Meistersingers, directed by Steven Zielke and Bella Voce and presented by Sandra Babb, perform this annual concert May 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Corvallis. The program will feature the West Coast Premiere of "To Repair," a movement work by Tefsa Wondemajejnehu, a leading figure in the justice choir movement, and "Fire Dance of the Luna," by Darious Kim. NEW! Recruiting participants for virtual reality experiment: Psychology researchers are seeking participants who are at least 18 years old, speak fluent English and have normal or corrected-to-normal vision for research aiming to explore how perception and movement interact in real and virtual environments. Participants will complete movement- and perception-based tasks for around one hour. Resilient Teaching Faculty Learning Communities: Funded summer professional development opportunity for OSU instructors and tenure-track faculty who regularly teach credit-based Corvallis and Cascades campus courses. Participants wanted for OSU Research Study: Taste Perception of Carbohydrates. Potential subjects must be healthy, non-smokers between 18 and 60 years old. Studies will involve tasting carbohydrate samples and may involve saliva collection. Studies conducted at the Corvallis campus, compensation $10 per hour. Community Climate Survey: The 2022 Faculty and Staff Community Climate Survey launched on May 10 with an invitation from Interim Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Scott Vignos. Please check your email to access the survey link; the survey is open through June 3. The survey is administered every two years to gauge the opinions and perceptions of employees regarding their experience at OSU. It is one part of OSU’s broader efforts to create and sustain an inclusive and equitable university climate. To hear from as many people as possible, a $25 incentive will be provided to 50 randomly selected survey participants. The information participants enter for the incentive will not be linked to responses to the survey to ensure responses remain anonymous. Questions about the survey can be directed to OID at [email protected].

Call for Applications: Career Champions Program. Applications for the fall 2022 Career Champions program for teaching faculty and instructors are now being accepted. The Career Champions program provides faculty and instructors with tangible ways to incorporate career connection into the classroom, while advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and examining the barriers to access for first-generation, high financial need, and/or students of color. More information can be found on the Center for Teaching and Learning website. Please direct questions to the director of Career Integration, Brenna Gomez. COVID-19 testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology (WVT), is providing on-site COVID-19 testing for people without symptoms. OSU employees and students, regardless of vaccination status, are welcome to test at one of these locations: Corvallis: Lab tent outside Plageman Hall Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and Cascade Hall 120, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Bend: Outside Obsidian Hall Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Note: All employees will need a WVT Labdash account prior to testing.

Traffic and Maintenance

Utility tunnel: May 11-June 3. For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, an access hatch to the utility tunnel will be removed and relocated. The current hatch is located on Jefferson Avenue across from Kerr Administration Building. Additional access hatches can be found west, north and east of this location. Communication lines in the tunnel in this area are temporarily supported and impede movement. Staff should avoid this area of the tunnel, if possible.

Washington Way: For work related to the Washington Way Improvement Project, a planned sidewalk closure along the north side of SW Washington Way is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. Friday, May 6 through 5 p.m. Monday, June 13. Pacific Power will be on site performing work related to the project (view map).
