Wave lab: Oregon State University researchers on Thursday tested the resiliency of two building models against a hurricane-like storm surge at the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Lab at OSU. Each building model was built to the same specifications, but the orange one was built on stilts that if scaled up would place the house 6 feet off the ground. The researchers are studying the impact the stilts have on the building’s durability. The findings can then be incorporated into design standards for buildings in hurricane or tsunami zones. The research is funded by the National Science Foundation and Department of Homeland Security.
