“Understanding how the ocean works is an underlying motivation,” says Toby Westberry, a botanist at Oregon State University, and the paper’s lead author. “It is vast and still poorly understood in many respects.” (see also Earth.com)
Monique Udell, an animal behaviorist who studies human-animal interactions at Oregon State University, notes that there could be other explanations for the head-tilting behavior beyond concentration and recall. “Maybe it helps them see better or hear better — and get a different perspective,” Udell says. “Lots of species will move their heads or bodies to respond to important stimuli in order to get a better sense of what that thing is.”
Gov. Tina Kotek has nominated Grant Kitamura, a longtime local onion executive to the Oregon State University Board of Trustees. Kitamura, co-owner and general manager of the onion packing firm Baker & Murakami Produce Co. in Ontario, was selected early in March to fill an at-large position on the board. He joined Murakami Produce – founded by Sig Murakami in 1969 – in 1980.
Oregon State University researcher Neil Shay says they’ve been testing mice to see how much raspberries impact things like weight gain.
Lab dedication: On April 28, the College of Engineering held a dedication ceremony for the newly named Nancy Squires Aerospace Engineering Lab. Squires, who passed away in 2020, was a senior instructor and instrumental in starting the college’s aerospace program. Members of her family along with Andy Dong, head of the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering, and Scott Ashford, Kearney Dean of Engineering, unveiled the building’s sign during the ceremony. Joint Service Review: The Army, Navy/Marine and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Programs (ROTC) at Oregon State University will hold their annual Joint Service Review at 10 a.m., May 5 in the Memorial Union Quad. This event is a longstanding tradition that allows cadets and midshipmen to participate in a formal review before commissioning as officers in the various military services. The reviewing official and guest speaker will be Major General Michael E. Stencel.
50 Years of Women in OSU Army ROTC celebration: OSU Army ROTC is hosting a lunch event to celebrate 50 years of women participating in the program. This event will be held at McAlexander Fieldhouse at noon May 5.

College of Public Health and Human Sciences research seminar: Joan Casey, University of Washington, will present “Long-term exposure to wildfire particulate matter: Does the particular metric matter for health and environmental justice?” 1-2 p.m., May 5 in HFC 115 or via Zoom. Valley Library open house: The OSU Libraries and Press open house takes place 2-4 p.m., May 5 at the Valley Library. The library made many changes in the last couple years and staff will showcase some of the current, new and upcoming spaces and projects. There will be an opportunity to tour the library while looking for key displays and areas on each floor.

Pet Day: Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine Pet Day is from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. May 6. Come over to Magruder Hall for family- and pet-friendly activities to learn more about veterinary medicine. Activities include hospital tours, a 5K Fun Run, bounce house, teddy bear surgery, dog-wash and nail-trim station, a variety of animal-themed vendors and so much more. The Making of the Northwest Forest Plan: A conversation with K. Norman Johnson, Jerry F. Franklin and Gordon H. Robotic Sound research study: The Oregon State University Department of Mechanical Engineering is conducting a research study to better understand how people interact with robots that sound different. The study lasts for about 45 minutes. The full study title is “Evaluating Sonification for Interactive Robots” and the principal investigator is Prof. Naomi Fitter. OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until May 19: The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer.
