According to data from the first weekend of door-to-door testing, an estimated two per every 1,000 Corvallis residents had coronavirus. Assistant professor Ben Dalziel, project leader, said that’s enough cases to cause concern. He said if we reopen too quickly, it could cause another period of exponential growth in the number of cases. (see also Oregonian)
 

For Latinos and COVID-19, doctors are seeing an alarming disparity (New York Times)

“Not all Latinos are created equal,” said Daniel López-Cevallos, professor of Latino and health equity studies at Oregon State University. More Latinos in states with established communities, he said, are likely to have middle-class jobs or the sort of wealth that could help tide them over through the pandemic without having to work outside the home.

“I learned to sew in middle school, and my friends all know I love sewing, so they started sending me articles about different DIY communities making masks,” said McKee, an academic advisor for College of Engineering at Oregon State University. “It seemed like a great idea. I picked a pattern I liked and that wasn’t too difficult, then I started sewing a bunch of masks.”

Music à la Carte (Facebook Live): Anthea Kreston, violin & viola, and Jason Duckles, cello: The Music à la Carte concert series continues with a series of Facebook Live events on Fridays, keeping alive the decades-long tradition while following Oregon State University’s commitment to help reduce the risk and spread of COVID-19. On Friday, May 8 at noon, the series will feature Anthea Kreston and Jason Duckles. Kreston and Duckles will be performing from their home in Corvallis and have promised a special appearance by “The Quartissimos,” their family quartet. EOP career panel: The Educational Opportunities Program is celebrating its 50th year of supporting Oregon State University students. This virtual career panel will feature EOP alumni of color discussing their experience transitioning from college to professional careers. Public health seminar: The College of Public Health and Human Sciences is meeting the current public health crisis head-on and hosting its Friday Research Seminars online from 1-2 p.m. most Fridays. Jarrott, Ph.D., professor of social work, College of Social Work, Ohio State University, will present “The intergenerational compact: Need and support for intergenerational relationships during COVID and beyond” via Zoom. University Budget Committee: The University Budget Committee will meet this Friday, May 8 from 2-3:30 p.m. via Zoom. The UBC is OSU’s advisory body to the Provost for recommendations on tuition rates, budget priorities and budget policies. The committee will discuss projections and planning relevant to developing budget recommendations for 2020-21. Members of the university community are welcome to join the meetings as observers. If you are interested in joining as an observer you may register for the webinar here. Kits are limited to the first 100 registered participants and can be picked up at the MU. Feel free to register and attend the Zoom sessions even if you can’t pick up a kit. Craft sessions take place each Friday in May at 4 p.m.

Career Group Counseling: Does COVID-19 have you feeling anxious or stressed about your path from college to career? An OSU career counselor and CAPS counselor will facilitate several small-group dialogue sessions for OSU students. Join us for one of these sessions to get ideas from your fellow classmates, hear shared questions about reaching future career goals in the midst of Covid-19, and hear from people at the university who are dedicated to helping you succeed. Beavers SAVE Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention. Learn how to reach out and help a friend. Suicide is one of the most preventable causes of death. This workshop will provide the skills you need to effectively help or intervene with a friend or family member who is considering suicide. NEW! Faculty & Staff COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund Under IRS Code Section 139: In collaboration with the OSU Foundation, Oregon State University is offering emergency financial assistance grants through the OSU Faculty and Staff COVID-19 Disaster Relief Fund. The purpose of this fund is to help regular classified and unclassified employees in our university community with unexpected needs during this unprecedented time of the COVID-19 pandemic. All classified staff, professional faculty and academic/research faculty are eligible regardless of service time or FTE. An individual must be actively employed on the date of grant distribution. Read more about the details of the program here. Student hourly employees, graduate assistants, and stipend recipients (e.g., fellows) are not eligible. OSU Extension Service Office Offering Pressure Gauge Testing: Pressure canner gauge testing is available at the Clackamas County Extension Service, where a safety risk management plan has been implemented. Call (503) 655-8631 to schedule an appointment. If you need to get your gauge tested, but are uncomfortable coming to the OSU Extension Service office, the Family & Community Health Program recommends that you convert your dial gauge canner to a weighted gauge canner, as weighted gauge canners do not require testing. If you own a Presto pressure canner, you can purchase a 3-piece weighted gauge from a store that offers canning equipment. If you own an All American canner, you can purchase a conversion kit online.
