Thanksgiving 1964: The Associated Women Students (AWS) organization was established in 1924 for the purpose of furthering the educational, social and cultural aims of women. It served as an umbrella group for Oregon State’s women’s living groups, honorary societies and clubs. AWS sponsored a variety of activities, such as war bond and stamp fundraising drives during World War II. Grace Gao – Biological & Ecological Engineering Ph.D. Defense: Grace Gao will present her dissertation, “Development of a low-cost cathode material, a novel reactor design, and an accelerated cathode durability test for practical applications of microbial fuel cell technology,” on Friday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m. in Kelley 1001. Gao is completing her Ph.D. under the guidance of major professor Hong Liu. Free and open to the public.

Board of Trustees: The Executive and Audit Committee of the OSU Board of Trustees will hold a telephonic meeting from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, to consider a recommendation of potential candidates for an anticipated trustee vacancy, the board’s 2020 calendar, and an audit progress report. The committee also will receive the annual compliance and ethics program report, an annual Office of General Counsel report, and a legislative update. Room 207 within the university’s Memorial Union will be open to the public as a site for listening to this meeting. The public also can listen to the meeting by calling the toll-free number listed on the agenda. Pursuing a Career in Science workshop: Join the College of Science for a career presentation and panel discussion by Young Alumni Awardee Justin Hall, who will present on "Observations and advice for pursuing a career in science” on Nov. 16, 1 p.m., in LPSC 402. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with three additional scientists: a portfolio operations analyst, a research professor and an R&D engineer.

Health in the Arab world: The College of Public Health and Human Sciences’ weekly research seminar will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in HFC 115, Bray Conference Room. Iman Nuwayhid, professor and dean at American University in Beirut, will present “Health in the Arab world: The social, the political, and identity.”

Tour the Human Services Resource Center: The Human Services Resource Center is more than a food pantry. It’s a one-stop shop to help students get their basic needs met. Advisors, staff and faculty are invited to come get a tour at Champinefu Lodge and learn more about programs like the textbook library, cooking classes and emergency housing. Prospective student open house: Beaver Open House, an open house program for prospective students, will be in LaSells Stewart Center and the Memorial Union on Saturday, Nov. 17. There will be approximately 1200+  guests on campus, which may impact parking and retail food locations. Please welcome the guests while they are on campus.

OHSU Medical School Panel: Interesting in learning what med school is about? Five students from the OHSU Medical School form a panel to answer questions on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Asian & Pacific Cultural Center. There will be a Q&A as well. Refreshments provided.

Rowing: Orange & Black Regatta, Nov. 17, racing begins at 10 a.m., OSU Boathouse.

Vienna Boys Choir: The Vienna Boys Choir will perform two shows, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m, in Corvallis on Saturday, Nov. 17, in the First United Methodist Church, 1165 N.W. Monroe St. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door for adults, and $10 in advance and $15 at the door for youth through age 18. OSU students are free with ID while there is seating available. Seating is general admission. Advance tickets may be purchased online at http://liberalarts.oregonstate.edu/SACevents. OSU students may pick up advanced tickets in Fairbanks Hall 309A or B on the OSU campus. Tickets will be sold at the door starting one hour before each performance.

Clothing swap: A clothing swap is taking place Nov. 1-30 at the Hattie Redmond Women & Gender Center on campus. Accepting gently used clothing donations for all gender identities, ages and sizes. No donations necessary to participate. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The 38th Annual Holiday Marketplace: A large and festive arts fair, with over 100 Oregon artisans, featuring fine art, handmade crafts and specialty foods. The event takes place on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. There will be live musical performances throughout the two days. Retirement Reception for Indira Rajagopal and Kevin Ahern: You are invited to attend a retirement reception for Indira Rajagopal and Kevin Ahern, both currently in biochemistry and biophysics in the College of Science. They are retiring after 29 and 30 years, respectively, of service to OSU. Faculty-Led Study abroad: Join faculty members in Public Health and Human Sciences to learn about faculty-led options for study abroad and internships. Psychological Science colloquium: A fall term series of talks by faculty, students, affiliates and guests of the School of Psychological Science at OSU. Anita Cservenka of OSU will speak on “Marijuana use and cognitive functioning in young adult college students,” Nov. 19, 4-5 p.m., Reed Lodge 219. These colloquia offer an informal venue to discuss completed and ongoing research of broad interest. Bridging the arts and sciences: Carol Ryff will present “Bridging the arts and sciences for human betterment” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the MU Horizon Room. Ryff is professor of psychology and director of the Institute on Aging at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She will be visiting OSU as a guest of the provost, the deans of the colleges of Public Health and Human Sciences, Liberal Arts and Engineering. Carol’s visit will highlight the developing partnerships among the three colleges in efforts to build healthier communities through arts and science. A reception will follow.

Leadership Collaborative I: Applications for the winter 2019 Leadership Collaborative (LCI) are now being accepted. The LCI includes six day-long sessions and features engaged, self-directed learning; a collaborative learning approach; practical, effective tools and skills; and on-the-job implementation. All OSU employees are encouraged to apply. Contact Kristen Magis for more information. Submit your application on the LCI webpage by Dec. 7.

Help Create a Vision for the Corvallis Campus: Oregon State is embarking on an 18-month process to develop a physical vision for the future of the Corvallis campus. The  Physical Development Strategy will reflect the university’s values and vision from the Strategic Plan 4.0. Share your thoughts in an interactive survey. We’re looking to craft a development strategy that supports an environment that enhances your best OSU experiences, and also leads to a more welcoming and inclusive campus. All responses are anonymous and confidential and will only be used for the purposes of this project.

Heroes sought: The Professional Faculty Leadership Association is seeking nominations for the Our Hero Award to recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond while exhibiting leadership skills. PFLA membership is not required of the nominator or the nominee. Pet owner survey: The Oregon State University Human-Animal Interaction Lab is looking for pet owners to take a survey examining pet behavior and the human-pet relationship. The purpose of the survey is to assess how pet owners perceive the bond they have with their pet. If you are 18+ years old and own a pet you are eligible to participate. For individuals who own more than one pet, the survey can be taken multiple times (once for each pet) or a single time for a pet of your choice. AWSEM clubs: Registration for STEM Academy’s AWSEM (Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering, and Math) Clubs for sixth- through 12th-graders is open. AWSEM clubs are designed to nurture girls’ interest in STEM by providing a program of hands-on activities paired with women STEM role models. Middle School club meets on Tuesdays, 5-6:30 p.m., from Jan. 15 through Feb. 19.
