'Lifeboats' amid the world's worst wildfires (New York Times)

These havens shelter species that are vulnerable to fires. Afterward, they can be starting points for the ecosystem’s regeneration. “Those trees are lifeboats,” said Meg Krawchuk, a fire ecologist at Oregon State University.
 

The storm that blew Oregon away (Jefferson Public Radio)

The Columbus Day storm blew onshore with winds in excess of 100 miles an hour, toppling buildings and trees and more. Dozens of people died in the storm, described in John Dodge's new book A Deadly Wind.  The book is from Oregon State University Press; OSU itself sustained heavy damage in the storm.  (see also Gazette-Times)

World Mental Health Week: World Mental Health Week will be celebrated at OSU Oct. 8-12. The week will feature events and trainings to help students de-stress, make new friends, learn about campus resources that support mental health, reduce stigma around seeking mental health support and learn how to help friends or family members struggling with mental health issues. Mental Health First Aid: An eight-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses. Training will occur Friday, Oct. 12, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Spots are limited. Prospective student open house: Fall preview, an open house program for prospective students, will be in LaSells Stewart Center and the Memorial Union on Friday, Oct. 12. There will be approximately 800 to 1,000 guests on campus, which may impact parking and retail food locations. Welcome the guests while they are on campus.

WIC kickoff: The Writing Intensive Curriculum (WIC) Program is holding its Fall Kick-Off Lunch on Friday, Oct. 12, from noon-1 p.m. in Milam 215. The speakers will discuss designing assignments that allow space for curiosity-driven topic choice, share ideas for teaching with curiosity about our students as writers, and explain how the Writing Studio works with student writers and with WIC classes.

Thesis Defense – Water Resources Graduate Program: Aaron Rachels, Friday Oct. 12, at 1 p.m., in The Valley Library 1420. The title of his thesis is “Quantifying impacts of timber harvesting operations on suspended sediment inputs to Oregon Coast Range.” Rachels is advised by Kevin Bladon of CoF.

Waste assessment: Two dozen students from an Oregon State University sustainability assessment class will sort through garbage from across campus on Oct. 12 as part of the second annual waste audit. Hosted by Campus Recycling and the sustainability double degree program, the audit will take place from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the SEC Plaza, 2251 S.W. Jefferson Way, Corvallis. The public is invited to watch the process.

The College of Public Health and Human Sciences’ weekly research seminar will be held Friday, Oct. 12, 1-2 p.m., in HFC 115. Karen Davison, the Fulbright Canada research chair, faculty in the health science program at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University, will present “Feeding Minds: Nutrition, Food Security and the Promotion of Mental Health.”

TEAM Oregon Open House: Join us for the TEAM Oregon Open House, located at 3550 S.W. Deschutes Street, on Friday, Oct. 12, from 1 to 4 p.m.  During this event view riding demonstrations and riders can join in 'slow races' for a chance to win prizes. Meet the staff, enjoy refreshments and learn about Team Oregon's role at OSU and in Oregon. Precision riding demonstrations will take place at 2 and 3 p.m. This event is part of the OSU150 Land Grant Festival.

Climate Niches and Herpetofaunal Risk: The Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology seminar series will be hosting Dede Olson on Friday Oct. 12. Olson works with the US Forest Service improving our understanding of the ecology of amphibian disease. In her seminar “Climate Niches and Herpetofaunal Risk.” Oct. 12, 3 p.m. in LINC 302.

Speech Communication Colloquium: Trischa Goodnow, professor of speech communication, will present her talk, “Enough is Enough: Visualizing School Violence” on Friday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. in STAG 113. This presentation will contain graphic/offensive images. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

CMLC re-opening:  Saturday, Oct. 13, is the grand re-opening of the Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center. The event takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. in OSU's newly-named Einerson House on 26th and Jackson (the former Asian and Pacific Cultural Center building.) Ribbon-cutting ceremony takes place at 1 p.m., snacks, music, tours to follow. 

Urban Horticulture open house: Saturday, Oct. 13, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Urban Horticulture Open House. There will be wood-fired pizza for sale. James Cassidy will be on hand to talk about soil. Amy Garrett will share information on dry land farming. OCCUH buzzes with activity, and you can get to know the bees with Andony Melathopoulos and learn about backyard bee keeping with Carolyn Breece. Come taste the honey. Cody Buckman and Alan Shay will speak about vegetable production and riparian zone exploration. You can even play croquet on the low input fine fescue plot. This event is part of the OSU150 Land Grant Festival.

Robert Michael Pyle reading: Join renowned naturalist author Robert Michael Pyle for an event at the Corvallis Public Library on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. He'll read from his new novel, "Magdalena Mountain." NEW! Theodore Roosevelt at OSU. Joe Wiegand is the nation’s premiere reprisor of Theodore Roosevelt. Joe’s live performances have been featured at hundreds of historic places associated with TR’s life and legacy. Joe has been featured at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and served as the body model for the seated naturalist Roosevelt bronze sculpture in Roosevelt Memorial Hall at the Museum. Weekly Bridge Walk: You are invited to join the OSU community for 45 minutes of conversation and movement. Our weekly bridge walk combines the benefits of social connection and physical activity on overall well-being. The walk is a flat, paved 2.8 mile out and back path to the covered bridge. Walk at your own pace. Join us for the full walk or just a portion. We meet in front of the Womens Building on 26th Street. Look for the Recreational Sports volunteer with the Bridge Walk sign. Kaiser will discuss the development of HydroShield, which is currently being patented by OSU. Free and open to the public.

Campus recycling event: Bring your questions and questionable items and join Campus Recycling to cover the basics of how to recycle correctly at OSU. State of the Coast conference: Registration has opened for Oregon Sea Grant's annual State of the Coast conference, which will be held Oct. 27 in Coos Bay. The public is invited to attend. The event aims to bring together scientists, fishermen, the public, natural resource managers, teachers, students and conservationists. Students from Oregon State University and other universities in Oregon will talk about their coastal research and display their coastal-themed artwork. Presenters will include OSU associate dean Marion Rossi Jr., state Sen. Arnie Roblan, and science writer and author Sam Kean.

Sea Grant symposium: Oregon Sea Grant is holding its biennial Scholars Day Symposium, Friday, Oct. 19, 1 to 4:15 pm, in Memorial Union Room 109. Students currently supported by Oregon Sea Grant's marine and coastal science programs will present talks and posters that link research, education, extension, fellowship and communication. The public is welcome.

The Promise and the Peril of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics: Save the date of Oct. 23, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Join us for all or part of this symposium that culminates Oregon State University’s 150th anniversary and explores the benefits, risks, ethics and uncertainties of the emerging technologies of artificial intelligence and robotics.  Registration is free but required.

Athletics

Trick or Treat Thru Gill: The annual Trick or Treat with the Beaver student-athletes is back and scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Gill Coliseum from 7-8 p.m. Each of OSU’s intercollegiate sports teams participates in the event and all children are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite costumes. The event is free.

OSU Athletics Hall of Fame: Join iconic members of the 2006 and ’07 College World Series championship baseball teams and the 1970 and ’71 volleyball teams that changed the culture of women’s athletics at OSU at the official induction ceremony Friday, Oct. 19, at the Toyota Club in Reser Stadium. The ceremony also includes the induction of longtime OSU administrator Sylvia Moore, standout women’s basketball player Felicia Ragland, and one of the first African American athletes at OSU, Earnel Durden. Upcoming Fiscal Policy Changes: Several years ago, the Division of Finance and Administration initiated an extensive review of the university’s processes related to fiscal policies, dedicating a "Lean Process Team" to evaluate current practices. The team identified potential risks, best practices, opportunities for improvement and ultimately recommended a new fiscal policy program. This program has been under development for the past year and will be implemented campus-wide in the very near future. A notice of upcoming changes posted on this site provides more information about the new program, governance structure, process improvements and comprehensive website.

Applications for PCOSW scholarships and event co-sponsorships for Winter term projects are now being accepted: The President’s Commission on the Status of Women provides funding to faculty, students, and staff who are pursuing professional development, research, outreach, or creative projects related to women’s issues. Scholarships average $500 and are paid by reimbursement. Applications are due Friday, Oct. 26, with notification in Week 7.
