“There are a lot of flavors of drought,” said Adam Ward, a hydrologist at Oregon State University who was not involved in the study. Abnormally dry stream conditions, a collective phenomenon termed streamflow drought, tend to follow prolonged meteorological drought, which is brought about by a lack of precipitation; the length of the lag depends on factors such as the size of the basin.
"Authoritarian pet parents are those who have high expectations of their dogs, but may be less accustomed to adjusting their own behavior in response to the dog's needs, whereas authoritative pet parents have both high expectations of their dog and a readiness to adjust their own behavior to help their dog feel comfortable, safe and supported," Dr. Monique Udell, a professor at Oregon State University who was the study's corresponding author, told Salon by email.

FYI Friday – CourseLeaf CLSS for Advisors, Faculty, and Staff: CourseLeaf CLSS is OSU’s section scheduling software and is primarily used by department schedulers to add, remove, cancel and otherwise edit section information that appears in the schedule of classes. While the ability to make changes in data in CLSS is limited to designated department or unit representatives, others may find CLSS a useful tool for querying or exporting term data, viewing past terms and proofing their schedules. Anthropology lecture series: Luisa Reis Castro (University of Southern California) will give the lecture “More-than-Human Segurança: An ethnography of microbes, mosquitoes, and humans in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.” She will speak on Friday, Oct. 28 at noon. John Grade talk and reception: John Grade's monumental sculpture, "Emeritus," suspended in the middle of OSU's giant sequoias in the Memorial Union Quad, is inspired by the form of an absent tree. This event will include an informal viewing of the sculpture, complimentary food/no-host wine and beer, artist talk, informal conversation and book signing. Wildfire documentary: A new documentary, “Elemental: Redefining our Relationship with Wildfire,” begins a weeklong run Friday, Oct. 28, at Corvallis’ Darkside Cinema. “Elemental” features interviews with scientists including professors Chris Dunn and Bev Law of the OSU College of Forestry. The opening screening at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by a question-and-answer session featuring the filmmakers as well as Dunn and OSU Professor Erica Fleishman of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences.

Kids’ Trick-or-Treat: The annual Trick-or-Treat Tour for families takes place on Halloween (Monday, Oct. 31) from 3-5 p.m. You must come to the MU Family Lounge to pick up a map with all of the tour stops before heading out. We have worked with many campus partners to ensure many opportunities for your children to pick up a treat. Costumes are not required but are encouraged. This event is open to students, staff and faculty and you must always remain with your child.

UPDATED DATES! Beaver Boosters: OSU will be providing COVID-19 booster clinics on the OSU Corvallis campus, Tuesday, Nov. 15 through Thursday, Nov. 17, from noon to 4 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 62. Clinics are open to the public and will provide updated bivalent boosters for individuals 5 and older, plus COVID-19 vaccine for ages 6 months and older, while supplies last. OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until Nov. 30: The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available on the Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits without restrictions. Please note the FDA has extended the self-test kit expiration dates by six months.
Lane closure on SW Washington Way through Nov. 10: As part of the Washington Way Improvement Project, there will be a one-lane closure with flagging operations on SW Washington Way between SW 35th and SW 30th Streets. Work is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, starting Monday, Oct. 24 and continuing through Thursday, Nov. 10 (view map).
