Rising tide: Pacific Northwest could soon double or triple its small number of seaweed farms (KUOW)

The Oregon company was an outgrowth of Oregon State University research into seaweed varieties suitable for farming in the Northwest. When OSU announced its researchers had patented a “seaweed that tastes like bacon” in 2015, it created a minor sensation with headlines such as “The new, sustainable superfood,” "the new kale," "the magical bacon unicorn of vegetables," or combined all in one: "Move Over, Kale: Dulse is the Superfood of the Future.

“[We] found that retiring one year later was associated with a nine percent lower mortality risk,” said Chenkai Wu, lead author of a 2016 study into the link between retirement and longevity and then-PhD-student in public health at Oregon State University, in an interview with Harvard Business Review.

An Oregon State University study found that spent hemp biomass -- the main byproduct of the cannabinoid (CBD) extraction process of hemp -- can be included in lamb diets without any major detrimental effects to the health of the animals or their meat quality.

Chrissy Lucas-Woodruff, outreach program coordinator for OSU Extension in the Willamette Valley, has spent the last 15 years working with small-scale farmers, landowners and new residents to educate them about nitrates, and to test their wells.
 

Cable array to study ocean upwelling (Newport News-Times)

A research vessel launched from the NOAA dock at Newport Wednesday to deploy buoys and other equipment to the Endurance Array, the Pacific Northwest coastal component of the Ocean Observatories Initiative, a global network of sensors collecting data to study ocean change.
 

New rollout date announced for Oregon's wildfire risk map (KTVL)

"The purpose of the map—a collaboration between ODF and wildfire scientists at OSU’s College of Forestry—is to provide transparent and science-based information to Oregonians about the factors near them that drive wildfire exposure including weather, climate, vegetation and topography," ODF said.
 

Education preparation programs pivot to meet students' need as school staffing shortages persist (KEZI)

At Oregon State University, Associate Dean of Educator Preparation Programs Kristen Nielsen said recruitment numbers are starting to rise again after fall due to the pandemic. Those numbers are expected to meet or exceed pre-pandemic levels within a year or two.

“The future has to be in the classroom,” said Burns. “It’s the one place where every student goes.” Faculty members can — and should — talk about career development, said Brenna Gomez, Oregon State University’s director of career integration. Students trust their professors, she said, and want them to talk about careers. Oregon State now encourages faculty members to integrate career-readiness activities into coursework and to put career competencies on syllabi.

Free bike registration: OSU’s Department of Public Safety and Transportation Services is hosting a bike registration event on Sept. 26 from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the McNary Dining Quad. The event is free. Registering your bike with 529 Garage is a tool used by law enforcement to reduce bike theft and obtain information such as serial numbers and photos in the event your bike is stolen. You can also register for ZAP Oregon State, a free bike commute rewards program for Oregon State University students and employees.

Elliott State Research Forest Forest Management Plan listening session: A public listening session will be held on Sept. 27 to discuss recent drafts of the Forest Management Plan being developed by OSU. Crucial Conversations for Mastering Dialogue: This 10-hour course teaches skills for creating alignment and agreement by fostering open dialogue around high-stakes, emotional or risky topics at all levels of your organization. By learning how to speak and be heard (and encouraging others to do the same), you’ll surface the best ideas, make the highest-quality decisions, and then act on those decisions with unity and commitment. This program consists of a series of five live, online sessions on Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon, Oct. 6 through Nov. 3. Internationalization grant application now open: The Office of Faculty Affairs Internationalization Grant is open to all OSU professional and academic faculty and INTO OSU employees. The program awards up to $5,000 for projects that advance the university’s internationalization agenda. OSU Advantage: The OSU Advantage Innovation Impact Program is accepting applications for its fall Accelerate cohort which begins Oct. 4. Accelerate is open to teams who want to launch high-growth businesses or explore the commercialization potential of an idea. Upon completion of the hybrid program, teams will have a five-minute pitch deck, product market validation, mentor feedback and more. This year’s report highlights IT accomplishments across OSU during the 2021-22 academic year. We've made significant strides to unify the way IT works for OSU and cultivating an IT community with shared vision and goals – enabling us to architect a modern institution that is ready to deliver on its missions across teaching and learning, research, and extension and engagement. 

Public Service Loan Forgiveness: The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) provides public service employees with federal student debt forgiveness, in certain situations, after 10 years or 120 consecutive monthly payments. On Oct. 6, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced a change to Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program rules for a limited time as a result of the COVID-19 national emergency. Now, for a limited time, borrowers may receive credit for past periods of repayment that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF. The waiver ends Oct. 31, 2022. Join a representative from the Department of Education as they discuss the PSLF program, and the steps borrowers need to take to make sure they get credit under the Limited PSLF Waiver. Sept. 28, noon. Register for this webinar.

4-H volunteers: 4-H volunteers are the key to a successful 4-H program and create positive life-changing experiences for youth. Oregon has more than 6,000 adult and teen volunteers who offer their time and talents to our program. Benton County 4-H is home to over 200 of those volunteers. New volunteers receive a comprehensive orientation and training specific to their role, no knowledge or experience is required. Call for Blended Learning Fellowship Nominations: The Center for Teaching and Learning is accepting nominations and self-nominations for a 2022-23 Blended Learning Faculty Fellow. The Fellow will support CTL’s mission of enhancing teaching excellence. The Fellow will be involved in coordination, design and facilitation of faculty development around blended learning. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available on the Corvallis, Bend and Newport campuses. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits without restrictions. Traffic and Maintenance

Full road closure for section of U.S. 20: ODOT is working on a construction project to build a retaining wall, realigning and reconstructing a portion of the road and repairing damage caused by landslides on Hwy 20. Work includes fixing the road surface from milepost 55.4 to milepost 55.6 and milepost 56 to milepost 56.2 to create a smoother ride and prevent water from pooling. If you use this route for work at OSU-Cascades, research, field work or other travel, note that a two-week full road closure is scheduled Sept. 9-22. Detour information is available online. Expect daytime single lane closures Monday through Friday from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. through October 2022.
